Much too often, we take things for granted, and don’t think about them. They just work, especially if you are using Debian with its outstanding dpkg and apt package management tools. But one thing which amazes me every now and then again is apt-proxy.
Xen on Etch rocks!
I tried the Debian Xen packages on Etch recently, and I must say that thanks to the Debian Kernel Team and people like DD Steve Kemp, it is pretty much child’s play to set this up.
Time for some serious bashing of you-know-who
Normally, I’m trying to refrain from this. But after reading the latest blog entry from Debian Developer and Debian Project Leader #2 Steve McIntyre, I came to the conclusion that obviously the next Sunday doesn’t exist. Oh well…
wakeonlan from Debian and from the router
You probably know this situation: you’re at work, or on holiday, and you need an information from your machine at home. Or you’re at home, you have a working VPN to the company, but your workstation there is switched off. And of course you didn’t rsync whatever you need right at this moment, so…
Unfortunately you do not have flash 8
Today, Australian DD and SELinux kernel hacker Russell Coker wrote an open letter to Toyota. He wanted to visit their australian website to get information about one of their cars, and was greeted by the above headline.
Penguinistas (or Debian Chix) NG
DD Erich Schubert has a nice story (even with photo) about his niece Fiona visiting him and discovering his Tux. Our daughter Hanna Zuleikha, almost the same age, went to the “Zoo am Meer” in Bremerhaven with us in February, and guess at what she’s looking here:
Interview: Ian Murdock
I think that to our regular readers, I don’t have to explain who Ian Murdock is. But maybe there are people who came here from using other operating systems, and who may want to visit the following links to update themselves:
GLPI - a great add-on to OCS Inventory
Like I wrote here already, I installed OCS Inventory on a test machine for my boss - and after checking it for a while, he came with the next wish, which was: “Install GLPI as well”.
Nice new router
Today I stumbled over something in a brochure of a big German distributor - the Linksys WRV200 Wireless-G VPN router.
Howto report bugs the Debian way
So the days are getting shorter, the nights longer (good for hackers and other programmers), and all around the world there will be bug squashing parties, where Debian developers and other interested people will work on the next - latest and greatest - version of Debian GNU/Linux, codenamed “Etch”.
First look: Asus V2-AH2
So yesterday I went to my boss’ place to install both Kubuntu Dapper and Debian Etch onto his new Asus V2-AH2 box, which really gave us a hard time. But that wasn’t Debian’s or Ubuntu’s fault.
Review: LixSystems LX8100
It’s here. As some of you might have noticed from my personal blog, the machine which was kindly sponsored by LixSystems arrived on Friday. Plus we found another sponsor, who prefers to stay anonymous, and who kindly donated an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ EE plus 1Gig (2×512MB) of DDR2-667 RAM, made by German chipmakers MDT.
Much Ado About Nothing
That is the title of a comedy from William Shakespeare, and the last days somehow reminded me of that title. Why? Because sometimes, minor problems can get big ones…
Howto and Test: Debian Installer Beta3 - Part 2
Late yesterday evening, I showed how to install Debian testing aka the upcoming “Etch” version, using the text mode of the newly released Beta3 of the Debian Installer. Today, like promised, I’ll show the same procedure, but using the graphical mode instead.
Howto and Test: Debian Installer Beta3 - Part 1
We still have to deliver the promised test of the latest Beta3 of the Debian Installer for Etch. And today, I sat down and did it, and I made some screenshots while installing. So this is also a perfect Howto for people who until now never installed Debian.
ATTN: DELL BATTERIES!
Sorry for posting this headline in capital letters. But this time, it has to be. As the british Inquirer reported, there is a problem with the rechargables in several different models of Dell Laptops, and by now Dell has started a world-wide “Battery Recall” program (German version here; they also have it in Spanish, French, Norsk, and Portugès - as well as in Japanese and Chinese).
Help Test Etch Beta 3 Debian Installer
Today Frans Pop announced the release of the beta 3 Debian installer
Update on the ultimate DIY Linux home computer
In our articles “Our ultimate DIY Linux box” and “AMD prices are dropping“, we introduced three systems based on the new AM2 motherboards from AMD, while one was still based on a socket 939 mainboard. Later we regretted that this system isn’t available anymore. Here’s why: it has a successor…
AMD64 on nVidia mainboards
Debian Developer Erich Schubert built a new and relatively cheap computer for his father, and he reports that he ran into problems with sound on that nForce-based motherboard.
