Flexbeta.net examines a new Linux-based distribution, Cobind Desktop. This release differs from other Linux distributions by being one of the first to include Mozilla Firefox 0.8 and Mozilla Thunderbird in their initial release. Though Cobind Desktop only uses the XFce interface, and not the more popular KDE, it's entire design aims for a "clutter free workspace."

I'm probably not the only one around who thought DR DOS had seen its last headline. But there it was, on Yahoo PR News: DR-DOS 8.0 Ships, Advancing DOS as the Best Embedded OS. The much-storied DR DOS is now part of the DeviceLogics product line. DeviceLogics is a startup firm in Lindon, Utah, which is also home to The SCO Group. The two firms share some history as well as locale.

Microsoft Preparing to Release Code to Open Source

After years of railing against open source, Microsoft Corp is preparing to shift its stance by releasing code to the open source community. A member of Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative has told ComputerWire open source code is "coming". Stephen Walli, platform's business development manager, added Microsoft would likely release "non core" code - i.e. code that is not a part of the operating system.

Residential gateway reference platform runs embedded Linux

Toshiba America Electronic Components (TAEC) will ship in Q2 a platform for residential home gateway applications running embedded Linux. The platform targets clients for low-cost media gateways, IP set-top boxes, and video endpoints, and will be demonstrated at this week's Embedded Systems Conference.

In a bid to make greater use of the open-source community, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration has submitted an open-source licensing agreement to the Open Source Initiative. If approved, the NASA (news - web sites) Open Source Agreement will require developers using NASA code to share modifications with NASA and the open-source community.

DeviceLogics is shipping a DR-DOS based Linux loader that loads the Linux kernel while preserving DR-DOS in memory so that, upon Linux session completion, the system returns to DR-DOS. "DRLX" targets companies migrating embedded systems from DOS to Linux, as well as single-board computer OEMs wishing to simplify Linux installation.
