Being your own website host with Linux
Here is a quick tutorial on how to host your own website with Linux. This tutorial is the basics of setting up a Linux server.
Red Hat #2 fastest growing Tech company
If you think Linux is not on anyone's radar at Wall Street than you need to Ctl-Alt-Del.
Tips for finding disk usage using the command line
Figuring out available disk space is a common task no matter the operating system of choice. The command line for Linux can be a very useful tool to figure where space has filled up on your harddrives or other storage media. The command line is quick and does not require an extreme knowledge of UNIX based system commands in order to get your desired results. What is great about the command line is it doesn't matter the Linux distribution. All distributions come with their form of UNIX based console interface.
Novell bringing Linux to American schools
Kevan Barney of the Novell Open PR blog gives a couple of examples of Novell bringing great Linux solutions to American schools. The first example shows how Novell provided open source solutions to the Whitfield School of St. Louis, Missouri. The second example is an excerpt from Government Technology, a e-zine covering solutions for state and local goverment in the information age. A telling excerpt from the article "We've rejected one-time deals, or free-the-first-year deals, because that doesn't help with sustainability," Huffman said. "We don't want to get three years into this project and realize that's as far as the fiscal plan will take us."
Basic tips for optimizing SuSE
We all would love to blow our next paycheck to get the latest hardware. Yet there are ways we can be frugal with our money and get the most out of our Linux box. I decided to explore some of the ways SuSE users can really get the most bang out of their system. These tips can really be used on most any system but I am going to show them in reference to SuSE 10.0 with KDE.
Most common software installation sources for SuSE 10.0
One of the most common questions among new SuSE users is asking where to get new software packages or RPMs. SuSE distributions come already loaded with a large multitude of applications. Yet not even SuSE can hold all the applications available. Linuxblogger compiled a list of the most common YaST source installation repositories for software packages.
AMD Strengthens ties with Novell
Bruce Lowry of Novell Open PR says that AMD is moving up to become a platinum partner with Novell in the technology program. Platinum partner is the highest level of company relations with Novell. This continues an already strong relationship that the SuSE development team has with AMD engineers. A full time AMD engineer is moving on site to Novell. This of course is going to help Novell's enterprise server market. This is definitely better news from Novell than what we have been hearing lately. Novell definitely needs to show some positive PR of late. If there were any doubts about SuSE's future I believe Novell has only the best of intentions and great promise.
Making a SuSE DVD from SuSE CD ISOs
OpenSUSE has a How-To for making a SuSE DVD iso from the SuSE CD iso images. This very issue was one of my only complaints about the SuSE OSS distribution which I mentioned in Review: SuSE 10.0 OSS Install. Needless to say I was ecstatic about the possibility of converting the CDs to just one DVD. This will make future installations so much easier.
Firefox 1.5 available for SuSE via Yast
You can downloand the new .rpm for SuSE. Follow links for Yast Installation sources depending on PC (32, 64, PPC). SuSE 10.0 is even included.
Linux Christmas gift ideas
Norm Chow of OReilly Net has an all important seasonal article about Affordable and Essential Christmas Gift Ideas for Computer Geeks. Here's to hoping that Norm gets the point across over at the OReilly Net office. This led me to thinking what would be my list to recommend those that may want to surprise a Linux enthusiast. Now, of course, price is always a concern during the Christmas season so we will keep that in mind.
Getting Windows only websites to work with Linux
I was confronted one day by my wife that our new SuSE Linux computer could not access a website. My wife is an avid coupon clipper. She has found the internet to be a valuable source for coupons. One such place is Albertsons which uses Smartsource to host its web based coupons. Well what my wife saw was a webpage that posted "Our printing coupon technology is not supported on Linux".
KDE 3.5 installation source for SuSE 10.0
Installation source for KDE 3.5 is finally available for SuSE users.
