Norm Chow of OReilly Net has an all important seasonal article about Affordable and Essential Christmas Gift Ideas for Computer Geeks. Here's to hoping that Norm gets the point across over at the OReilly Net office. This led me to thinking what would be my list to recommend those that may want to surprise a Linux enthusiast. This led me to thinking what would be my list to recommend those that may want to surprise a Linux enthusiast. Now, of course, price is always a concern during the Christmas season so we will keep that in mind.

1. Gift card to Fry's Electronics, Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, MicroCenter, etc. This can always go far no matter the value. Gift cards give us Linux geeks an excuse even if we go way over the amount of the card.

2. Linux distribution on CD/DVD, especially a Live CD distribution, that we haven't tried yet. There are so many choices to choose from. Peruse DistroWatch to find out. We may learn something that we thought we hadn't. This can be a great stocking stuffer and we will have plenty of time to play around with it before we start back at the office after New Years.

3. A computer software or hardware book from a discount or half price book reseller. The thing that I have found in my encounters with Linux entusiasts is that we are always thirsting for knowledge. Be creative and give out a list to your family and friends of that SQL, PHP, Perl or Python book you've been wanting. This need not be an expensive request at all.

4. Organization supplies for the home office. My desk is a clutter of CDs, DVDs, mail, books, and whatever the thrill of the month gizmo. Anything to help is all the better.

5. Upgrades for the computer. Is there some computer accessory you especially need? I'm not talking about the $399 video card that just came out. Memory sticks have really dropped in price. Also network cards, cables, and surge protectors are relatively cheap. Or if you have a computer savvy family member maybe hint at a firewire or USB accessory you have wanted.
