It was announced on Tuesday that the KDE Catalan l10n team will work together with TERMCAT (Catalan link), the organisation that standarises new words, usually technology related, in the Catalan language.

Microsoft Corp. was accused Wednesday by a group representing IBM Corp., Oracle Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. of abusing its dominance in products such as Word and Excel.

"We have evidence that Microsoft has refused to disclose formatting and other information," Thomas Vinje, a lawyer representing the group, said. "Word processing, spreadsheets and presentation programs can't achieve full interoperability with Microsoft Office."

The next version of Red Hat's Fedora version of Linux will include software to give the operating system some of the eye candy of a rival Novell project--but it will use a less intrusive mechanism, advocates say.

Novell's project is called GLX, and Red Hat's alternative is AIGLX, short for Accelerated Indirect GL X. X refers to the Xorg software that handles graphics in most Unix and Linux computers, and GL to the OpenGL standard for 3D graphics.

Some people still think KDE can not do groupware as well as proprietry systems. I found on the KDE site, the German publisher Bomots offers a German book about Kontact, KDE's Personal Information Manager. I decided it was time to see if this book, "Kontact Kompact" by Andre Schreiber, is useful for people looking for a replacement groupware client, and people willing to learn Kontact. Georg Greve, president of the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE), criticised the IT industry on Wednesday for not doing enough to support the European Commission in its antitrust case against Microsoft. Greve said that despite the importance of the antitrust case in establishing the bounds of acceptable behaviour in the IT industry, the FSFE has been one of the few organisations that has helped the Commission.

As Linux use continues to grow, requests for popular applications on the operating system continue to grow as well -- requests that mostly go unanswered by vendors of those software. Last month Novell posted a survey to find out what applications Linux users want most. After three weeks, the company released the top 10 applications users requested. The list is a mix of the usual suspects and a couple of surprises.

ReactOS is part of a decade old effort to replicate a Windows operating system as an open source or free software based system. It's not the only effort trying to duplicate Windows type functionality on an open source system. The Wine project which began in 1993 is a similar effort but unlike ReactOS its goal is not to produce an entire operating system, but rather just allow Windows applications to run on Linux. Certain elements of Wine are also part of ReactOS.

SUN MICROSYSTEMS bought up Linux firm Aduva for an undisclosed sum. Aduva, an Israeli start-up, has its HQ in Sunnyvale Californian and an R&D centre in Ramat Gan, round the corner from an Intel fab. Aduva provides Linux and Unix management services focused on reducing the total costs and risks in the lifecycle of a Linux Server and, it says, dynamically managed Solaris Servers.

"JBoss has always been about pure open source. We started in OSS and we will die in OSS."

Despite an increase in the number of corporates involved in the development of free and open source software applications, the majority of FOSS code is still being developed by individuals and the vast majority of these do it primarily to learn new skills. Rishab Ghosh of Maastricht University said this during the opening of the Idlelo 2 conference in Nairobi, Kenya this morning.

Most Linux people don't know much about JBoss, the open source firm reported in talks with Oracle about a $400 million purchase. That tops any free software deals I can recall. Novell paid $210 million for SUSE in cash. So, what about this JBoss company? They did it without any initial outside funding, generated revenue and self-funded and stayed true to open source 100% while selling services.
