Firefox has become a formidable adversary in the browser wars. According to stats from W3Schools, it's used by 26.3% of all browser users. Our own stats show a total of 19.53%. Release Candidate of OpenOffice 2.0 now online

This Thursday, the Open Source project OpenOffice presented Release Candidate 1 of its free Office suite; this test version -- possibly the last one -- was, however, already available for downloading from the OpenOffice web site before the official release on Thursday: all of the mirror servers had been prepared since Wednesday. With the release of RC1, the developers are entering the last test phase. The results of this test will show whether additional release candidates will have to be produced before the Final Release.

Customizing and tweaking has always been a part of computing. Now that Opera is a completely free browser with no advertisement banners and most of you might have already got your hands on it, here are some tips to make it do even more than it already does.

Linux: Git Kernel Hacker's Guide

The git directory content manager used to manage the Linux kernel source tree [story] continues to develop at a rapid pace [story]. Keeping up with the latest changes, Jeff Garzik released an updated version of his Kernel Hacker's Guide To Git. He explains, "several changes in git-core have made working with git a lot easier, so be sure to re-familiarize yourself with the development process."

Jeff's short guide is broken into four major sections, ' getting started' which talks about installing the software and getting a copy of the linux kernel source tree, ' basic tasks' which offers examples of keeping up to date with the latest code and merging in your own changes, ' branches' offering examples of creating, using and merging branches, and 'miscellaneous debris' which mentions applying patches from an mbox file and syncronizing tags. Further documentation on the various git commands can be found in the git man pages.

Design of $100 laptop for the world's children unveiled

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The $100 laptop computers that Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers want to get into the hands of the world's children would be durable, flexible and self-reliant. The machines' AC adapter would double as a carrying strap, and a hand crank would power them when there's no electricity. They'd be foldable into more positions than traditional notebook PCs, and carried like slim lunchboxes.

Mark Shuttleworth, the first South African in space, is buying a 65% stake in an empowered company that will make owning a computer cheaper. Shuttleworth's vision is to bolster SA's progress in the computer technology field.

Tools: GCC 4.0.2

Mark Mitchell announced the availability of GCC 4.0.2. He explains, "this release is a minor release, containing primarily fixes for regressions in GCC 4.0.1 relative to previous releases." GCC 4.0.1 was release two and a half months ago on July 7th story. A list of bug fixes in 4.0.2 can be found here.

GCC is the GNU Compiler Collection which includes C, C++, Objective-C, Fortran, Java, and Ada compilers. Download GCC 4.0.2 from a gcc.gnu.org mirror.

Linux, microcode speed PowerQUICC IP routing, NAT by 10x

Arabella is shipping microcode for Freescale NPUs (network processing units) that it claims speeds IP routing and NAT (network address translation) by a factor of ten, when used with its asymmetrical multiprocessing (AMP) Linux implementation. Expedited Fast Path (EFP) microcode supports PowerQUICC II chips and older NPUs with CPMs (communications processor modules).

The STx5300 family provides support for the Linux OS, an emerging requirement for many operators, in addition to supporting legacy software. The new device embeds a USB2 Host interface which allows peripherals to be easily added to a basic STB to provide a low cost upgrade path for additional functionality. In particular, it would allow the STB in the field to become a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) by the addition of a hard disk drive.
