Firefox has become a formidable adversary in the browser wars. According to stats from W3Schools, it's used by 26.3% of all browser users. Our own stats show a total of 19.53%. This Thursday, the Open Source project OpenOffice presented Release Candidate 1 of its free Office suite; this test version -- possibly the last one -- was, however, already available for downloading from the OpenOffice web site before the official release on Thursday: all of the mirror servers had been prepared since Wednesday. With the release of RC1, the developers are entering the last test phase. The results of this test will show whether additional release candidates will have to be produced before the Final Release.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The $100 laptop computers that Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers want to get into the hands of the world's children would be durable, flexible and self-reliant. The machines' AC adapter would double as a carrying strap, and a hand crank would power them when there's no electricity. They'd be foldable into more positions than traditional notebook PCs, and carried like slim lunchboxes.

Mark Shuttleworth, the first South African in space, is buying a 65% stake in an empowered company that will make owning a computer cheaper. Shuttleworth's vision is to bolster SA's progress in the computer technology field.

Mark Mitchell announced the availability of GCC 4.0.2. He explains, "this release is a minor release, containing primarily fixes for regressions in GCC 4.0.1 relative to previous releases." Arabella is shipping microcode for Freescale NPUs (network processing units) that it claims speeds IP routing and NAT (network address translation) by a factor of ten, when used with its asymmetrical multiprocessing (AMP) Linux implementation. Expedited Fast Path (EFP) microcode supports PowerQUICC II chips and older NPUs with CPMs (communications processor modules).

The STx5300 family provides support for the Linux OS, an emerging requirement for many operators, in addition to supporting legacy software. The new device embeds a USB2 Host interface which allows peripherals to be easily added to a basic STB to provide a low cost upgrade path for additional functionality. In particular, it would allow the STB in the field to become a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) by the addition of a hard disk drive.
