While Gates had a point about OLPC being able to come to full fruition, I think he is out to lunch on the idea that third-world countries are interested in Windows, paying for software and any potential malware headaches that will arise with running a stripped down version of XP on these systems.

Hardy Hero, a new version of Ubuntu, was announced a little while ago, and the features for this release of Ubuntu are actually rather compelling to me. It’s rare these days that any one program gets me really excited, as I always feel like I have seen it all. Today, however, I believe I have come upon software concepts that have a lot of potential. Both are very different from one another, yet each is very strong in function in their own way.

Generally speaking, I have been quite happy using Nautilus with a little help from Tracker from time to time. Nautilus is a no nonsense file manager that allows most users to get the most out of their files and the way they choose to manage them.

Most people these days think of Everex as the company that’s looking to bring Linux-powered desktop PCs with their own brand of Linux to the masses.

A lot of people have been reporting issues with Ralink (rt61, especially) chipsets and the Gutsy upgrade. Some users are struggling so much that they have gone ahead and reverted to using NDISWrapper and the Windows driver for their Ralink chipsets.

It’s been interesting to watch the evolution and adoption of the XO laptop that’s been created by the One Laptop Per Child project. Like most of you, I still haven’t had the chance to get my hands on one and experience what it’s like, but I hope that the opportunity presents itself soon.
