Last time I looked at Ubuntu (that was ‘Breezy Badger’, or 5.10) I noticed a little applet popping up and telling me that there were updates available for the machine.

Ok, so what does it do? It sits as an applet in the Gnome panel, and it informs you about updates. Not much functionality for people who - like me - are used to the ‘apt-get update’ and ‘apt-get upgrade’ command lines, but surely an eye-catcher for those who watch - especially the Debian version with its rotating swirl. This is nice if you want to promote or advocate Debian, or if you come home and log in and instantly see that this day your better half did no update/upgrade.
