On March 8th and 9th 2006, Richard Matthew Stallman is to hold a couple of lectures in Zagreb, Croatia as part of the series of lectures named "Society of Knowledge and Free Sharing of Information" ("Društvo znanja i slobodna razmjena informacija") as announced by the Multimedia Institute in Croatia and the Croatian Academic and Research Network (CARnet).
The first lecture to be held March 8th at 7PM is going to be about the dangers of software patents. The location is the House of Croatian Journalist Association ("Novinarski Dom") at Perkovceva Street 2 in Zagreb.
The second one to be held March 9th is about the future of GNU movement, Free Software and the future of freedom. The exact time and location for it should be determined at the first lecture.
Lectures Overview:
"Dangers Of Software Patents" (March 8th, 7 PM)
Software patents are patents on software ideas that limit the development of software as every decision about the structure of a program bears the risk of legal suit. While patents in other areas limit producers, software patents limit every computer user. Economic research also shows that they slow down progress. In this lecture, Richard Stallman will further elaborate the way software patents constrain the development of software.
"Free Software Movement and the Future of Freedom" (March 9th)
Richard Stallman will talk about the goals, philosophy and future of the Free Software Movement as well as the state and history of GNU Operating System which, in combination with the Linux kernel, is today being used by millions of users around the world
About the lecturer:
Richard Stallman is the founder of the Free Software Movement. In 1984 he started the development of the GNU operating system (see http://www.gnu.org). GNU is Free Software which means that everyone has the freedom to copy, share and make changes to it. GNU/Linux operating system, basically GNU OS with the Linux kernel, is today used on millions of computers worldwide. Stallman, as a programmer is credited for the development of GNU Emacs, GNU C Compiler and GNU Debugger. He is also the author of the GNU General Public License for Free Software and the concept of copyleft. He is the winner of many significant awards such as the MacArthur Fellowship Award by the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the award for his contribution to the social and economic development by the Takeda Foundation.
About the series:
With the lectures of Richard Stallman, Multimedia Institute and CARnet are continuing the series of lectures on the topic of "Society of Knowledge and Free Sharing of Information" which elaborate alternatives to regulations that limit free access to culture and knowledge in the "infosphere" and development of social potentials of new technologies. Since it's beginning in 2004, the project presents the most significant world experts on issues of free sharing of information, cyberspace rights, intellectual goods, free software, open technological standards and open access to knowledge and scientific content and balanced social development.
