The NoSQL database, though not new, is worth taking a look at to refresh the mind about the power of some of the core fundamentals of Unix-like systems.

In these days of monstrous, monolithic applications, it is easy to forget the basics of Unix philosophy: Do one thing and do it well. NoSQL builds on this concept.

One of the great aspects about Open Source Software is that it serves as a huge repository and testing ground for so many ideas and new ways of doing things.
