The NoSQL database, though not new, is worth taking a look at to refresh the mind about the power of some of the core fundamentals of Unix-like systems.

In these days of monstrous, monolithic applications, it is easy to forget the basics of Unix philosophy: Do one thing and do it well. NoSQL builds on this concept.
One of the great aspects about Open Source Software is that it serves as a huge repository and testing ground for so many ideas and new ways of doing things. Even the largest corporations could not afford themselves a research department that could approach such a level of innovation. The design of NoSQL really "out-of-the-blue." Though possibly not usable in many scenarios where large RDBS technologies have proven themselves, NoSQL is is worth keeping in mind when tempted to design yet another large, do-everything application.
I originally found the link on the home page of [HYPERLINK@planetkde.org] but have provided a link to Roberto's site so that it should be accessible for a while. The article contains a reference to a NoSQL tutorial from 1999 that is interesting reading.
