Open source: where we are now. where we are going

A number of historians have warned that no society can really understand the historical significance of current events as they are happening, but hell, let's give it a try anyways. In fact, I'm gonna really stick my neck out and say that this is the time before abundance in the IT industry, the time before the time when our IT buffet truly offers more than most of us can eat in any one sitting for most applications. The result will be a explosion of creativity from the fringes of the social network, as the demand side increasingly supplies itself, to quote Doc Searls.

In fact,once the IT buffet opens its doors for all eternity, I predict that we will rapidly forget what it was like to be hungry for IT tools, so now is a good time to pause and reflect about where we are, and to take some snapshots for our open source family album to look back upon in our old age.
The buffet is already so big that it is impossible for one article to cover it all without getting really boring really fast. But check out some of the open source advancements described in this article. I'm hoping that there will be some new tidbit for everyone. I know that I will leave out some important stuff, and for that I apologize with an excuse: this article is intended to provoke discussion about what applications our Mad Penguin™ readers find important for their lives now.
