Preston:Why did Novell choose to shift to the Linux business?
Alan Nugent: Novell's core business traditionally has been network operating systems. NetWare used to be the market leader in the early 1990s. Because of competition from Microsoft, as well as some loss of focus within Novell, we lost that lead. NetWare revenues remained a big part of Novell, but were declining at a 14% year on year rate.
We'd built up other businesses – collaboration with GroupWise, management with ZENworks, identity management with our directory technology and Web services with our exteNd solutions - but these weren't growing quickly enough to offset the NetWare decline. At the same time, we had a huge NetWare installed base.
So we needed something to help address the NetWare decline while keeping the installed base happy. We think Linux fits the bill perfectly. We're bringing the NetWare services customers know and love to the Linux platform. New customers can get state of the art Linux servers and desktops from Novell. Existing customers can introduce Linux into their networks alongside NetWare. It's a win-win.
