Frictional Games is one of those few development teams which releases Linux native versions of their games and quite possibly the only one that provides us ‘Tux Gamers’ with the survival horror fix some of us crave.

Ah, the Horror genre… How many people have endured sleepless nights or strange nightmares thanks to games like Silent Hill, Doom 3 or even Dead Space?

Good thing I brought those three up… You see, the Horror genre in video games can be divided into 3 categories. There’s one where the monster jumps out of a dark corner scaring you out of your seat –that would be Doom 3. There’s the one where the monster walks at you in slow motion accompanied by a shrieking violin –that’s Dead Space. And then there’s the kind of horror where you know there’s a monster in a dark corner and you know it’s going to jump out at you but it doesn’t and the suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat –that’s your Silent Hill. The latter is possibly the best, because it preys on the natural human dislike of uncertainty and it is where Penumbra: Overture fits, for the most part.
