Sub-$80 BOM cost and production ready - Starfish cuts cost and development time for volume deployment

Campbell, CA (April 21, 2004) - Equator Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance, programmable and power-efficient system-on-a-chip (SoC) processors for video streaming and image processing applications, today announced the immediate availability of Starfish™ - a new embedded hardware platform designed for rapid deployment of low-cost and Linux-based, multi-format video-over-IP appliances.
Target applications for the multi-format Starfish hardware platform include: IP set top boxes, video streaming appliances, digital media players, personal video recorders (PVR) with extra long recording, DVD jukeboxes and digital media adaptor products for sharing media between PCs and TVs.
The Starfish hardware platform features a low-cost, single BSP™-15 processor chip that handles all system and media functions. Equator’s BSP-15 SoC processor runs Linux and system software natively while delivering high-performance audio and video processing. The BSP-15’s advanced processor architecture, strong optimizing compilers and on-chip MMU support full-featured Linux with memory protection, making multi-threaded complex application software more robust.
The BSP-15 is 100 percent C/C++ programmable, providing adopters of the Starfish reference design low development cost and fast time-to-market with advanced functions. Linux-based audio/video applications can be ported to Starfish quickly using Equator’s gcc-compatible compiler tools. Starfish’s key advantage is Equator’s signature multi-format video support, providing digital media appliance support for the industry’s widest selection of audio and video formats, including certified Microsoft Windows Media 9 Series at Main Profile.
