Friedman: Expectations rising over Linux desktop

Commercial vendors and Linux distributors are listening to the masses -- and fueling the hype -- with plans to shore up a viable Linux desktop solution for the enterprise. IBM, for one, has made noise about moving to Linux on its desktops internally. Sun has released its Java Desktop System and Novell/SuSE and Red Hat have also made some rumblings lately about renewing their commitments to a Linux desktop. Novell has already brought in a couple of heavyweights with its acquisition of Ximian last year and SuSE Linux AG in January. Not only did Novell snare the popular Ximian technology, but it brought aboard luminaries Nat Friedman and Miguel de Icaza. Friedman will deliver the keynote at this week's Real World Linux Conference, and in this interview, he discusses Novell's commitment to the Linux desktop, barriers, misconceptions and the importance of success stories.
