Presenting FEDORA CORE 2
Opening May 18 on 32-bit x86 and 64-bit x86_64 computers worldwide.
Interview: Andrea Arcangeli
Andrea Arcangeli is well known for having completely rewritten and stabilized the virtual memory subsystem in the 2.4 Linux kernel. Many were surprised when Linus Torvalds merged Andrea's VM into 2.4.10, but the new memory subsystem has long since proved itself. Andrea is a 27 year old Linux kernel hacker living in Italy and working for SUSE.
The system, man
I firmly believe that you should spend as much of the time you dedicate to free/open software and actually spend the time doing real, tangible, measurable and pragmatic things. If you are advocating Linux, instead of writing rules and regulations on how your advocacy project should manage its resources and how its official branding should be created, just get out there and call a person/charity/school/business and get on with it. The red tape will be needed at some point, but not until a stage when you are becoming a big noise in the advocacy world and when you are working on lots of different projects with different members.
A Tip of The Brim With New Fedora Core
"Fedora Core 2 looks to be one of the best released Linux distributions to come out of Red Hat," Keating told internetnews.com. "The operating system just seems very, very solid, very polished, technically advanced and I can't wait to install it on every system I can."
Build yourself a Linux-based Internet gateway
My Windows Internet gateway was running slower than a snail going uphill, even on a pretty speedy machine (a 1.3GHz Athlon), but when it started crashing regularly, I knew I had to do something. I downloaded and burnt Mandrake 10.0 Community, opened up a very old computer (with a CPU clock in the low three figures), and took care of the problem once and for all.
Novell's Linux Desktop Zeroes In on Integration
Novell Inc., which last year bought SuSE Linux and Ximian, is working on a single desktop product to ship before the end of this year. That product will combine the best features from both the Ximian desktop and the SuSE Linux desktop, both of which shipped last year, in a single Novell desktop that will have Novell support, training, channel, partners and global reach.
Screech! Users hit the brakes on Linux server migrations
The number of Windows administrators who are seriously considering migrating to Linux has fallen off considerably over the past year, according to the results of SearchWin2000.com's 2004 Microsoft Report Card survey. In the past two years, the survey asked IT administrators and managers to rate their interest in moving over to Linux. In 2003, the number of Windows pros interested in Linux spiked upward, only to drop back down again in 2004.
Commentary: If only Cisco code had been open source
The 15 May 2004 theft and publishing of the source code for Cisco's IOS router firmware could mean a wave of exploits against the critical router infrastructure of the Internet will be on its way. If that happens, it will be because Cisco ignored one of the iron rules of network security -- and experts the world over will be muttering "if only IOS had been open source."
Mozilla 1.7 RC 2 released
Mozilla 1.7 release candidate 2 has been released with an impressive list of changes.

Bob Muglia, senior vice president of Microsoft's Windows Server division, last week spoke with Computerworld about a range of issues, including the competitive threat posed by Linux.

Roll your own Linux distribution
Tired of the over-designed, over-engineered and over-hyped Linux distributions currently available? Why not build your own version of Linux that runs off a CD (or installs to your hard disk in just a few minutes)? And when your PC dies on you next time, you have your own customised Linux Desktop on a CD for quick re-install. This how-to outlines a simplified process to quickly build your own version of Morphix.
Review: Fedora Core 2 Brims With New Features
What's new in the latest beta (1.92, Test 3) of Fedora Core 2? Plenty, and I'm not talking about new versions of this or that package (they're there), a slicker installer (it is), or a prettier desktop (it isn't). Nosireebob, the changes in Fedora Core represent what might amount to the biggest set of changes in the Linux distribution world since Caldera (yeah, I know, hiss, boo) introduced a graphical installer back in the dark ages of 1998.
Why choose open source?
This is Part 3 in a four-part series of articles that is roughly a response to "The Magic Cauldron," the seminal work on open source economics written by Eric Raymond. This installment discusses Raymond's "five reasons" for choosing to create or use open source products.
Coldfire gains MMU -- expect full-fledged Linux and tools soon
Freescale will unveil the first ColdFire core ever to include a memory management unit (MMU), and therefore able to run full-scale Linux, this week at the Embedded Processor Forum in San Jose, Calif. Simultaneously, Freescale tools subsidiary Metrowerks announced that it plans to offer Linux development tools for the core, and will continue to offer -- and enhance -- its uClinux tools for MMU-less ColdFire cores.
