Novell has effectively ordered SCO to drop charges against IBM based on IBM-owned Sequent's obligations regarding its System V Unix licence.

The United States District Court in Seattle has ruled in favor of Lindows.com Inc in the dispute over the trademark of the generic word, "windows." The company, will be permitted to use the name "Lindows" indefinitely or until the final decision in the case.

New mutt packages are available for Slackware 8.1, 9.0, 9.1, and -current. These have been upgraded to version 1.4.2i to fix a buffer overflow that could lead to a machine compromise. All sites using mutt should upgrade to the new mutt package.

Oracle India announced that Linux has emerged the second most popular OS platform among its developers in India, and that seven of its new customers have recently chosen to run its technology and applications software on the OS.

Linux developers now have access to a new java.net community. Launched by Sun Microsystems, it offers expanded support for Java technology-based development tools on the Solaris, Linux and Windows platforms.
