The liberated code, written in Java, once powered the Federal White Pages, a phone directory of federal employees located at directory.gov. The project, run by the International Trade Commission and a committee of small federal agencies, offered contact information for more than 450,000 federal employees from 22 agencies. After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, program managers shuttered the site because of security concerns.

Thanks to its speed and stability, MySQL has earned a place on millions of servers worldwide. The measures we'll talk about below will enable you to better secure your database, but be sure to secure the underlying operating system too.

What Red Hat Global File System could offer you

We have been reporting on high performance file systems for the past few weeks, which quite naturally led us to look at Linux clustering files systems. In the last three weeks, we have gone over high performance Linux solutions from Cluster File Systems, HP and IBM. I expect to look at several other high performance file systems in the near future, but for now let's take a break from that and look at what is available for Linux users who don't want to deal with third-party providers.

Collecting debugging information from the Linux™ kernel using printk is a well-known method -- and with Kprobes, it can be done without the need to constantly reboot and rebuild the kernel. Kprobes, in combination with 2.6 kernels, provides a lightweight, non-disruptive, and powerful mechanism to insert printk's dynamically. Logging debug info such as the kernel stack trace, kernel data structures, and registers has never been so easy!

Developer migrates from hobbyist to fantasy baseball titan

There are all manner of white papers and architecture documents on the features and benefits of migrating from MySQL 3 to MySQL 4. However, sometimes the best example is to see it done on the front lines of the Web business. I recently had a chance to chat with Tyson Lowery, a developer and proprietor of the online fantasy baseball site SimDynasty.com, and learn about his experience in making the MySQL move, marketing the site, and his views on Java and PHP. This was not a task for the slight of heart, considering Lowery's Internet property receives 75,000 to 100,000 daily page views and includes a corral of 25,000 registered users.

You want to consider a Linux-based solution to a computing problem. Your manager says he or she doesn't want any Linux anywhere, period. The next move takes careful consideration. Executives invest more in pride and face than any Samurai, and you can't safely confront them head-on or contrad ict them directly. You can, however, still integrate Linux into your company. In fact, every large company almost assuredly has Linux installed so mewhere in the network already.
