Open source, embedded-specific Java VM, class libraries relaunch
An open source project to offer an embedded-specific Java VM (virtual machine) and class libraries has been relaunched. Dutch software house Luminis and Belgian embedded Java specialist /k/ have taken over the Wonka project, which they say had languished since the late 2003 demise of founder Acunia.

Mozilla Europe publishes Firefox ad in German daily newspaper
Mozilla Europe , the European affiliate of Mozilla, said that it will publish the first ad in a print publication on Thursday. The full-page ad will appear in the business section of the Frankurter Allgemeine Zeitung, one of Germany's renowned daily papers. There was no word on what the organization actually paid for the campaign, but said that 2,403 people and corporations donated about 48,000 Euros (circa $62,900).

Firebird targets the enterprise database
Last fall Allan Grant was very upset following a meeting with his database vendor. Grant is the CIO of a large trading group with over $1 billion in sales. The database vendor had just completed a license audit and had concluded that the maximum allowed number of concurrent users had been exceeded by one for a three-minute interval during the week-long audit. Also the vendor had concluded that Grant's setup should henceforth be regarded as a "multiplexing" setup, even though it had not changed since the previous audit. To overcome both issues the vendor was proposing a new licensing agreement which would more than quadruple the total license cost.

Last Saturday was an important and busy day for Italian Tux fans. The fourth edition of the Italian National Day of Linux and Free Software took place in more than 100 cities all across the country. Not bad for a young, fully volunteer event.

New Novell Linux gains Oracle certification
Novell's SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9, released in August, has received certification from a key software partner, Oracle, a database market leader with an aggressive Linux alliance effort. Oracle 9i and 10g are certified to work on SLES 9 running on servers using 32-bit x86 processors from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, the company said Tuesday.
Most CIOs would consider Linux for email
Linux has gained further credibility in the enterprise after most IT managers said that they would consider the open source operating system as a platform for email. Over half of respondents to a recent survey indicated that they would seriously consider switching to Linux messaging over the next two years, if there was no disruption to end users.
