Developer migrates from hobbyist to fantasy baseball titan

There are all manner of white papers and architecture documents on the features and benefits of migrating from MySQL 3 to MySQL 4. However, sometimes the best example is to see it done on the front lines of the Web business. I recently had a chance to chat with Tyson Lowery, a developer and proprietor of the online fantasy baseball site SimDynasty.com, and learn about his experience in making the MySQL move, marketing the site, and his views on Java and PHP. This was not a task for the slight of heart, considering Lowery's Internet property receives 75,000 to 100,000 daily page views and includes a corral of 25,000 registered users.

You want to consider a Linux-based solution to a computing problem. Your manager says he or she doesn't want any Linux anywhere, period. The next move takes careful consideration. Executives invest more in pride and face than any Samurai, and you can't safely confront them head-on or contrad ict them directly. You can, however, still integrate Linux into your company. In fact, every large company almost assuredly has Linux installed so mewhere in the network already.

Twenty percent of all computers used by the Brazilian ministries are running Linux and other open source software. In a few months this number should grow to 100 percent. Through its Digital Inclusion Program Brazil wishes to democratize the use of computers. Government telecenters are being created throughout Brazil.

Novell to host a 'Linux Day' for India

Tyler McGraw, a database administrator at Bowater Inc., a paper maker in Greeneville, S.C., is finished making excuses for being an Ingres DBA. McGraw, who is also works sometimes as an Oracle DBA, said he has often had trouble keeping up in conversations with other IT professionals at industry trade shows and conventions.
