Native Linux Gaming: coming to a PC near you!
How many Linux geeks do you know that dual-boot to game? It's an unfortunately common thing for Linux geeks to be gamers as well. More unfortunate, however, is the seeming incompatibility of these two 'professions'. Sure you can play Neverwinter Nights, a handful of other ports, and un-ported games using WINE and Cedega, but where's the fun in that? Where are all the Open-Source games? When is the innovation that's been seen all over the Open-Source community going to make it's way to gaming? The answer is right now. Cube, an open-source FPS engine, is one of the most viable attempts to make native OSS gaming on Linux a reality. Jeremy at LinuxForumsDOTorg takes it for a spin, fragging his heart out to bring you this review, telling you everything you need to know about Cube.
Open Source Developers Are Rock Stars
When I was a kid, all I wanted to be was a rock star. I wanted to play guitar, get up on stage, and have everyone scream while I cranked out some hard rockin' tune. I wanted to see lighters held up in the crowd as I finished my last set - dripping with sweat, completely tired, and no energy left. Leave it all on the stage - that's what I wanted. My friends all felt the same - we talked about it all the time.

BitKeeper and Linux: The end of the road?
BitKeeper, the proprietary source management tool used by Linus Torvalds and other Linux kernel hackers to apply patches to their versions of the kernel, is once again at the center of controversy. This time it looks as if the relationship between Bitkeeper and the poster-child project for free software is going to come to an end as the result of irreconcilable differences. NewsForge has spoken with the three primary figures involved in the dispute -- Larry McEvoy, Linus Torvalds, and Andrew "Tridge" Tridgell -- to learn what happened and whether or not it could have been avoided.
Making a plastic texture with The GIMP
I got the idea for this project during a visit to a jewelry art exhibition. The artwork on display incorporated an amazing range of unconventional media, including rusted iron, precious stones and metals, wood, plastic, and the like. One of the most interesting creations among the "wearable art pieces" was a plastic object with a satin finish. I liked this satin effect so much that I decided to re-create it as a graphic material using the GIMP.

Google, Firefox offerings shame Microsoft
The week's most noticed giveaway was Google's addition of spy satellite images, which show nearly every address in the United States, to its map address-finding service. Even better was Firefox's new Scrapbook extension. A constant torrent of these new powerful tools stands naked as a lighthouse in a computer industry where innovation languishes like the cash building up in Microsoft's corporate treasury from continuing sales of the same old stuff.
How to spin statistics - Microsoft way
