New VTL Compression Board Further Reduces Backup Time and Offers High-Assurance for Recovery

Hifn provides a Linux driver and example software to enable rapid integration and quick time to market. Hifn's software abstracts the hardware from system software, minimizing customer software development time. Hifn's software also optimizes the system interface to the 9630HXL-PCIe compression resource.

LOS GATOS, Calif., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Network- and storage-security market leader Hifn(TM) (Nasdaq: HIFN), announced today the new 9630HXL-PCIe compression board for use in Virtual Tape Libraries (VTLs). Based on industry-standard LZS compression, the 9630HXL-PCIe can reduce backup windows by 50%, double available disk capacity, and enable higher network performance with fewer RAID drives.

Hifn recognizes that Enterprise customers are tasked with backing up an ever-increasing amount of data that routinely consumes available network resources and manpower. In a recent customer survey, conducted by storage research firm Enterprise Strategy Group, the number one complaint remained "Backups take too long" followed by "Recoveries take too long."

The 9630HXL-PCIe, the world's fastest compression board, delivers in excess of 1 Gigabyte per second compression and decompression performance. Additionally, the 9630HXL-PCIe compression board offers high-assurance features for backup, such as record CRC and decompress after compress verification for 100% record accuracy, as well as input/output bus CRC between components, for total data transfer protection.

"Our goal in developing the 9630HXL-PCIe compression board is to enhance VTL systems backup- and restore-performance, easily plug into VTL systems, and conform to industry standards -- basically do for VTLs what VTLs does for tape backup," said Robert Friend, product line director with Hifn. "We also want to provide our Storage OEM customers with a ready-made solution, enabling them to get to market quickly with proven technology and a best-of-breed feature set."

Utilizing the same industry standard LZS compression algorithm already deployed on over 100 million tapes the 9630HXL-PCIe is specifically designed for high-speed compression applications. The 9630HXL-PCIe uses four Hifn 9630 data compression processors with load-balancing, bus-mastering DMA, and a 4-lane PCI Express bus to achieve 1 Gigabyte per second aggregate sustained performance. The 9630HXL-PCIe also offers a unique "enhanced" LZS (eLZS) technology, which eliminates data expansion and guarantees a 1:1 minimum compression ratio.

The 9630HXL-PCIe board, as well as the related host software, are sampling later this quarter. The 9630HXL-PCIe is priced at $1,499 in volume quantities. The 9630HXL-PCIe is available in a full-height, half-length PCI Express form factor. Customers interested in evaluating the compression benefits of the 9630HXL-PCIe should contact the Hifn sales department or a local representative to schedule a software demonstration. About Hifn
