REJECTS SOFTWARE PATENTS. The European Union Parliament rejects the Computer
Implemented Inventions Directive (CIID), a controversial Software Patents
Directive, with a 648 - 14 vote. This decision supports the Foundation for a Free
Information Infrastructure (FFII) move to lobby for the limiting of software

SourceLabs, a provider of certified open source software, announces the launch
of SWiK, a community-based catalog of open source projects. SWiK allows the
open source community to contribute information, including documents, download

PROFIT: Red Hat announces a profit for the first quarter of its fiscal year,

LIMITED BENEFIT TO OPEN SOURCE BY CIOS. An IT executive survey by CIOConnect
shows that fewer than 10% of respondents believe that open source will provide

Chief Research Officer, for Gartner Research Asia-Pacific, says that open
source software may have a dampening effect on software innovation, as software
developers could be discouraged from developing new software due to the open
