Introduction: By now you've probably heard of Linux. I don't know what you know but I'll tell you what I do. The technically correct name of Linux is GNU/Linux due to but when most people say Linux they mean a full, free, open source operating system that is making waves across the world and making Microsoft sweat by competing with Windows. Linux is free. Consider the word "free" for a second.

First of a two part series article:

Linux is free. Consider the word "free" for a second.

The first thing people think about is when something is free that it has no cost. But something can be free in more ways than one. Not only is Linux free in cost, it belongs wholly to the public. Anyone of us can improve Linux. One can even sell it. Linux is also the flagship product of the "open source" movement. This is a sharp contrast to commercial software vendors who protect their technologies by keeping their code a big secret. Even if you don't quite understand what code is, just realize that Linux challenges the very foundations of business and software development methodologies.
