Here's a telling faux fas: A veteran Netscape developer, surveying the floor of LinuxWorld Expo 2004, found vendors running a mix of Windows, Linux and other OSs. She says in her blog review: “Sun was the worst, with only one Linux box I saw, and the rest all Windows: no Solaris that I saw.”

Anyone familiar with the Sun booth this year knows they run only one or two Windows machines. The rest are Sun's new Linux desktop, Java Desktop System.
The mistake was innocent, made just in passing, but it reflects Sun's success in integrating all the disparate open source and 3rd-party-proprietary components within the main screen and throughout JDS. It points up why independent consultants like us are jumping up and down about JDS.
