Be in Peace, Alex Bayley
LXer Feature: 27-Oct-2011
After seeing two great people leave us, I thought this month could not get any worse. but it did. Many of us mourn the loss of John McCarthy and Dennis Ritchie. but what are we losing really? their legacy lives on. Much greater is the loss of a person who has left our community not because of death but because she has been made to feel unwelcome!

I don't know who Alex Bayley really is, I have not even heard her name until today. But the tragedy of her situation that caused her to decide to quit her job and leave the tech industry because of that, strikes me as much more severe than anything else.
The worst thing a human being can do is to hurt another. And any loss caused by such hurt is more painful than any other loss. Don't compare the technical achievements of Ritchie and McCarthy today with those of Alex Bayley, you need to compare their achievements from when they were very young. and then think about the things that Alex Bayley could achive in 10, 20 years, the rest of her life...
It is that potential that we are loosing. A potential that any human is capable of. A potential that is crippled because of a few misguided people. I hope that Alex Bayley will be able to find a new passion, a new way to contribute to the progress of our civilization, and I hope that she will not be an example for other women to follow, but rather give them the strength to make her the last person to leave for such a tragic reason.
I believe I may let her name stand for all who suffered a similar fate. Who left silently because they were not known enough to make headlines. I hope that we can stand united against such injustice, but to achieve that, there is still a long way ahead. I am sad to see you go, but I wish you good luck on your future endeavors.
Alex Bayley, I will miss you! |
