After reading the news about Ian Murdock’s death and the follow-up mournings of the greater Debian community I remembered that I actually met him, talked to him, and even email-interviewed him in 2006.

When Richard Hughes, founder of Hughski Limited announced an “open source” colorimeter with full GPL source code and even Linux support late last year, he offered a developers’ discount for testers and early adopters. So I was quick to give him a nod on that one.

Before I forget to mention it: Ubuntu 9.10, the Karmic Koala is out. Cheers, fanfare, and so on. Now some people don’t like it a bit because of Mono. For those, Debian developer (and maintainer of Mono on Debian) Joseph Michael Shields has two answers:

1. It’s stupid.
2. Get Chicken Little Remix 9.10 – Karmic Kraienköppe instead.

I reported about printers which work well with open source once in a while. This time, it was myself who needed a replacement for the fax machine, so I was looking for an all-in-one printer / scanner / copier / fax. And I found one which I really like.

Since I put my workstation, which is at the same time the MythTV server / backend streamer for the family into a new case and added another TV card, I had some issues. I had read about udev already, but never actually cared much for it, not even to make rules for hot-pluggable stuff like USB sticks and so on. However, now I had to read, so this is what I did.

After ordering the parts for it some 3 weeks ago, the last of those parts finally arrived on Friday at noon, and with the help of our small one (she would report that the other way round; more to that later), I assembled the first ever ZaReason Mambo system, which Mitchie will keep and use for accounting.

Since he’s also a big fan of Linux and free software and also likes high definition, he asked my opinion and help about the topic, so I started to investigate a little for him.
