After reading the news about Ian Murdock’s death and the follow-up mournings of the greater Debian community I remembered that I actually met him, talked to him, and even email-interviewed him in 2006.
When Richard Hughes, founder of Hughski Limited announced an “open source” colorimeter with full GPL source code and even Linux support late last year, he offered a developers’ discount for testers and early adopters. So I was quick to give him a nod on that one.
Firefox is Germany's most used browser, according to online and TV media and a study of Fittkau & Mass, based on a questionnaire of 126,000 internet users. Link leads to the German "Tagesschau" online, Germany's top TV news source.
[Article in German. Recap: FF3 at 44,2%, IE8 25,5%, IE7 11,8% and IE6 7,2% - Sander]
Before I forget to mention it: Ubuntu 9.10, the Karmic Koala is out. Cheers, fanfare, and so on. Now some people don’t like it a bit because of Mono. For those, Debian developer (and maintainer of Mono on Debian) Joseph Michael Shields has two answers:
1. It’s stupid.
2. Get Chicken Little Remix 9.10 – Karmic Kraienköppe instead.
While researching the next possible line of mainboards for the products we’d like to offer, I stumbled over one thing. Which is: the resolution.
First off: this is no ad, nor a bying recommendation. In fact, I couldn’t really recommend this card. Not for Unix/Linux, and even more so not for Windows. But there’s help. Linux only, that is.
Yesterday evening, while I was at home in Freising, my brother called. He had some problems installing Ubuntu on our aunt’s computer, and asked for help. In the end, it was a success story. But it’s a quite lengthy one; it actually started years ago. Read on for more details…
We all know the term “FUD“, don’t we? If you haven’t heard of it, it means “Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt”, and it was created a big software monopoly, often headlined “Get the facts”. Some years ago, I got the real facts. And the real FUD.
Debian developer Russell Coker has an interesting blog post about compassion for Windows users. One of his friends asked him whether he feels that or not. Some of his answers...
As some of you might know, I opened the European ZaReason store this year. ZaReason is a company which is well known in the free software world, at least in the US, because it builds machines and sells them pre-installed with Ubuntu Linux. Now, at LinuxWorld Expo, the Alternageek video-interviewed Earl Malmrose, CTO of ZaReason, Inc.
Debian developer and former project leader Martin Michlmayr has got Lenny running on the HP mv2120 and other devices, better known as the "HP Media Vault". So if you're interested in a small but cool NAS device for at home or for your small business, this could be the one you're looking for.
You may have heard of it: I’m speaking about DSA-1571-1. Read more about it on the pages “Key Rollover“, or “SSLkeys“. It's NOT only affecting Debian.
If you have an IGP (integrated graphics chip set) like the RS480, or the RS690, then with the patch to a bug in MESA, the open source driver named “xf86-video-ati” now provides 3D, and you can expect that for example Compiz will finally run on your hardware. Non-proprietary.
I reported about printers which work well with open source once in a while. This time, it was myself who needed a replacement for the fax machine, so I was looking for an all-in-one printer / scanner / copier / fax. And I found one which I really like.
Since I put my workstation, which is at the same time the MythTV server / backend streamer for the family into a new case and added another TV card, I had some issues. I had read about udev already, but never actually cared much for it, not even to make rules for hot-pluggable stuff like USB sticks and so on. However, now I had to read, so this is what I did.
my wife Mitchie, also known as Hamidah. After ordering the parts for it some 3 weeks ago, the last of those parts finally arrived on Friday at noon, and with the help of our small one (she would report that the other way round; more to that later), I assembled the first ever ZaReason Mambo system, which Mitchie will keep and use for accounting.
A friend of mine (actually, he is also the CEO of a partner company of ZaReason EU) got very interested lately in HTPCs, the so-called home theater PCs. Since he’s also a big fan of Linux and free software and also likes high definition, he asked my opinion and help about the topic, so I started to investigate a little for him.
If you can't go to FOSDEM, the Free and Open Source Developers European Meeting next weekend in Brussels, Belgium, you can still watch live video streams from the Debian Developer Room, thanks to their video team.
Disclaimer: this is what we call “in eigener Sache” in German, meaning something like “on his own account”, according to LEO. What I want to say is - in a short “executive summary”: I just opened ZaReason Europe, based in Germany. So I tried to write something like a press release (link included), and to explain.
Hmmm - my son reminded me that today is considered a very special day for millions of people around the world. Almost forgot. So let’s ask one of our favourite mascots, and ask what day it is:
