I talk about Linux a lot and very often hear that people who tried Linux move back to their Windows installation. It is, in my surroundings at least, very rare that somebody switches to Linux completely. It seams that Linux is not yet regarded as a primary OS by the main audience. In past times the reason for this was obvious, the installation of Linux was difficult and required a lot of tweaking to get it work. Also there was no real support other than user forums. I myself love the concept of a friendly and helpful community but it is not every bodies cup of tea. Especially people who don't speak the language of the digital world have to take a big step before they post a question on a forum. Since a few years the support has improved a lot. You can buy distributions like Suse which are packed with a guide. Also the installation has improved a lot, though it isn't perfect yet. No, there has to be another reason why people stick to Windows.

I like playing around with different distributions. As soon as a new version of gentoo, suse, ubuntu, sabayon or fedora appears I want to try it out. What I'm getting tired of is having to reinstall my system again and again, which has to be done if using beta versions or other cutting edge software (like beryl) which trashes my system. Besides all this I hate dual boot so this is not an option for me. For this reason I wanted to try some virtualisation software to overcome this problem.

So, I switched from Debian Etch 4.0 to Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 to see what's new. I've been using Linux since 2001 trying various distros like Suse, Gentoo, Debian and Ubuntu. I guess that ubuntu is one of the best distros, mainly because the development is fast, the installation is smooth and the hardware support is great. Also it is very stable, not the most stable distro but you have to pay the price of living on the cutting edge of linux development at some point. Ok, let's cut the crap and take a look at the distro. First I'll say something about my system before I continue about the installation, hardware support and my subjective view on Ubuntu.

The Debian distro had to replace Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 which worked fine. I downloaded the netinstall cd from one of the debian mirrors and started the install. I noticed that I had to get used to the less beautiful installer again but all worked fine. The thing I missed though was support for wireless lan. If you distribute a netinstall version it whould be logical (to me at least) that you include support for all possible network hardware. Especially when you have so much space left on the disk.
