Due to Twitters immense popularity, there are far more desktop clients available for it than for identi.ca, especially for Linux. However, this time Linux has it all covered, from simple methods to “ident” your message (still looking for an equivalent to “tweet”) to full-fledged desktop clients, which bring all the functionality of the website to the desktop.

Some of the advantages of running Linux on a sub-notebook are a smaller memory footprint, better security and tons of free applications right out of the box. So here are some Linux distributions I recommend you try out, because they are modified to work well with small screens and modest hardware.

And I’m no Google fanboy, I just believe their browser is OK and that making a Qt4 user interface for Chromium could make Chrome a viable choice or alternative to Konqueror, thus enabling more users to switch from Gnome to the excellent KDE 4(.2).

Since it was the first real year for the blog (first post dated 6/1/2008), there were a lot of articles on extremely different topics in Linux, open source and the cloud, until it all pretty much focused on GNU/Linux. So before we start with the 2009 article batch, I thought it would be cool to take a look into the past and comment on the posts that were popular, and some of my personal favorites.

Aside from the removal of some annoying Vista bells and whistles and the new Peek and Snap window-management enhancements, it is difficult not to notice the resemblance between Microsoft’s much-touted revamped Aero and the excellent, now 3-years old, KDE 3.5.x.

In order to attract some interest for certain slow, but extremely important projects I’ve picked out a few attractive apps which could become powerful contributors to the widespread adoption of the Linux desktop.

So what can new users do with the command-line while enjoying the GUI? There is a multitude of applications that do the same jobs as their graphical equivalents, but are not dependent on X. Using them is just a matter of learning a few simple commands. You’ll be up and running in no time!

What I have for you today is a few distros which do not hide the manual (or for people like me, beautiful) underlying configuration. Also, by using the distro itself, you will learn a lot about Linux and how an operating system works. It is a fun and useful experience, believe me and never be scared of the command line. It is your friend.

It is very frustrating when you don’t know every programming language (I’m a PHP guy). There are so many things I’d like to change in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (it is still a great Linux OS), but don’t have the time/knowledge to do. I am very active in promotion, but maybe someone who knows his stuff will read this list of ideas for inspiration.
