In this screencast I show how to build and run a multi-service podman container from the base Fedora 33 image... all as a regular user aka a rootless container.

I got to see "Snowden" two days prior to national release at a special event dubbed "Snowden Live" because it included a satellite feed of a live Q&A with Oilver Stone and the two leads after the film... and Snowden himself live from Russia via webcam. The review is fairly spoiler free but I do give a few details as well as some information provided from the "Live" portion... and perhaps somewhat inappropriate "Social and Political Analysis" commentary too. Odin (formerly Parallels) and the OpenVZ Project announced the beta release of a new version of Virtuozzo today. This is also the next version of OpenVZ as the two are merging closer together... In the extended article I go over some of the details about the bare-metal installer, what's new including libvirt and KVM support, as well as some of the changes as OpenVZ and Virtuozzo merge together in the new release.

Fedora 22 was released yesterday... so I updated the Fedora 22 OpenVZ OS Template I created to be current and submitted it to contrib. For the fun of it I made a screencast that shows making a Fedora 22 container and then installing the MATE desktop environment along with a handful of common desktop applications and how to access everything via x2go.

ML: Where did the name Korora come from? Is it Kororaa or Korora?

CS: Koror? is the M?ori word for the Little Blue Penguin (also known as the Fairy Penguin) which is native to Australia and New Zealand, so it seemed like the perfect name for an Australian based distro when we started back in 2005. I guess I could have also called it Fairy Linux but that didn't seem to have the ring to it. Originally we spelled this with two a's on the end due to the accent on the letter however some years later it seemed unbalanced and so I changed it from “Kororaa Linux” to “Korora Project” when we wanted to better reflect the Fedora Project.

Máirín Duffy of Red Hat and the Fedora Project fame agreed to an email-based interview She is a graphic designer who has worked on many User Experiences (UX), User Interfaces (UI) and website designs. Máirín was the primary designer behind the somewhat recent Fedora Installer (Anaconda) redesign that originally landed in Fedora 18. She tells about her history with Fedora, her favorite hardware and graphics software, as well as the work she did on the Anaconda redesign, etc.

Most of the time I enjoy LinuxAdvocates.com. No, really I do... but there are times I disagree with the opinions expressed by one of the primary authors there (Dietrich Schmitz). He likes to write somewhat controversial articles... and I sometimes like to comment on them. In many cases there is no problem... but if you disagree with him you may very well find your comment deleted... and all of your future comments requiring moderation. What it leads to is a complete lack of opinion diversity. Rhetorical questions: Have you ever been censored on a Linux-related website? If so, why? How did you react afterwards?

The 12th annual LinuxFest Northwest was held on April 28-29th, 2012 in Bellingham, Washington. This was my 6th year in a row attending and wow, what a great show. From the presentations / sessions, the exhibits, the food, the party, and yes... the World Famous Raffle... LFNW 2012 was great. I recorded all of the presentations I attended and have posted the videos. Read more for all of the details.

The OLPC XO-3 Tablet is supposed to be unveiled on Sunday night at CES. While many probably remember seeing the somewhat unrealistic looking, early concept images from a couple of years ago, the final design looks quite obvious although I found the cover options surprising. A few pictures are included.

The KVM Forum 2011 was held at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver, Canada on August 15-16. It was co-located with LinuxCon North America 2011. LinuxCon was sponsored by The Linux Foundation who recorded a large number of videos from both events. Unfortunately, The Linux Foundation had few security breaches to deal with on their kernel.org and linux.com domains which (I'm guessing) has greatly delayed them doing post-production work on the recordings and posting them publicly. Luckily Red Hat has posted a handful of videos from the KVM Forum.

Scientific Linux is getting a lot of long overdue attention given the fact that it too is a solid enterprise clone... that has been around for a long time... that has a lot of support behind it. MontanaLinux is proud to present an interview that was conducted via email with Troy Dawson who is a long-time Fermilab employee and Scientific Linux developer.

Red Hat announced a number of new developments including OpenShift (Platform as a Service) and CloudForms (Infrastructure as a Service). Basically Red Hat continues to sponsor development on a large number of open source projects and bundles them together into more comprehensive solutions.

This was my 5th year attending and it was their 11th annual LinuxFest Northwest conference at Bellingham Technical College in Bellingham, Washington. As usual, I took my camcorder along and recorded all (8) of the presentations I attended and took a lot of pictures. Haven't ever attended LinuxFest Northwest? Here's your chance to learn about it.

Adding SPICE support to virt-manager is one of the upcoming features in Fedora 15 and as of 2011-03-28 it appears to be 100% done. I decided to use the fedora-virt-preview repository to check it out on my Fedora 14 workstation. Want to see how it works? Screenshots included.

Here are few of the changes that came with yesterday's set of Fedora 15 devel updates:

1. Fedora 15 appears to have incorporated all of the upstream GNOME 3 Shell changes. The experience is exactly like that of the GNOME 3 live beta
2. They added a way in the GNOME 3 Shell System Settings to switch back to the GNOME 2 style desktop
3. The GNOME 2 style desktop has been polished up some
4. Fedora has added some additional artwork for non-GNOME desktops

I've been making a personal Fedora remix for a while now... since Fedora 10. While that might sound hard, thanks to Fedora's livecd-tools package and their livecd-creator script, it is really quite easy. I even made a screencast about it. I recently started making a remix of Scientific Linux 6.0 and wanted to share.

What is SPICE? It stands for "Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environments". What does that mean exactly? SPICE is a remote display protocol designed specifically for use with the Linux kernel's built in virtualization hypervisor KVM. SPICE is similar to terminal services but rather than multiple users sharing a single, remote physical machine, SPICE allows you to graphically connect to and use a local or a remote KVM virtual machine. I got SPICE going on a Fedora 14 host machine with a Fedora 14 KVM virtual machine. I made a 13 minute video showing SPICE in action with common apps and multimedia.

Being a long time Red Hat and Fedora user it is hard for me to write Fedora reviews because I am biased. I decided to take a look at a few of the reviews for Fedora 14 and found something that disturbed me... mainly with the Linux Action Show video review. That lead me to examine a couple other reviews and put together a review of the reviews.

What do I use to test out webm? Since I already have quite a few avi videos I decided to convert some of them. I was amazed at the quality of webm conversions but realized that medium quality avi files aren't the best source material. How about DVD quality video? How about Sita Sings the Blues? That sounds like a no-brainer as it is a freely distributable movie with very high quality source files available.

With the permission of the presenters, I recorded all of the presentations I attended at the LinuxFest Northwest 2010 conference this past weekend in Bellingham, WA. This was the 11th annual event and it as fantastic. All videos are posted in Ogg Theora format and playable inline in Firefox via the HTML 5 video tag. They are actually streaming from archive.org.
