The first beta of openSUSE 10.2 is now ready for testing: "I'm glad to announce the first beta of openSUSE 10.2, code name 'Basilisk Lizard'. openSUSE 10.2 Beta1 contains a large number of enhancements and updates done by the open source community and Novell's development teams. Today Oracle announced that it would provide the same enterprise class support for Linux as it provides for its database, middleware and applications products. Oracle starts with Red Hat Linux, removes Red Hat trademarks, and then adds Linux bug fixes.

The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the release of Ubuntu 6.10, codenamed 'Edgy Eft'. This release includes both installable Desktop CDs and alternate text-mode installation CDs for several architectures. Highlights of this release include: Tomboy, an easy-to-use and efficient note-taking tool; F-Spot, a photo management tool that enables tagging, photo editing and automatic uploading to on-line web management sites; GNOME 2.16; substantially faster startup and shutdown with eye-catching high-resolution graphics; the latest Firefox web browser, version 2.0

This release includes many new features as well as enhanced stability and performance. Some highlights include: - a new easy-to-use CPU scheduler which includes weights, caps, and automatic SMP load-balancing; - support for Xen-oprofile to allow measurement and optimization of code paths; - greatly enhanced support for unmodified ("hvm") guests including Windows and legacy Linux operating systems; - support for dynamic-allocation and copy-on-write disks ("blktap/qcow"); - packet segmentation offload in guests to improve network performance; - enhanced support for IA64 (IPF) systems; and initial support for Power.

BeaFanatIX is a mini Live CD. It's also a compact Linux distribution. It was originally a remaster of BeatrIX but now uses a more recent Ubuntu core (more on that below). BeatrIX itself is partly on an old version of Ubuntu, but makes heavy use of Knoppix technologies. The common ancestor of all these distributions is Debian.

TCS has taken some great screenshots of SAM Desktop 2006-3. "Again based on PCLinuxOS software and XFce 4.3.90.2, SAM offers you a complete desktop environment for your older hardware. Myahos.com reports - Myah OS 2.2 is available for download. 2.2 is running on the very latest Slackware 11 packages with the exception of the KDE packages. I used an older release because of some problems with mounting media that are happening do to Slackwares lack of HAL and KDE's moving to HAL support. I have also used the Firefox 2.0 b1 version not the current b2 because of errors that came out with the b2 version. DistroWatch reports - Common to all variants, we have changed the init system from the venerable sysvinit to upstart which is an event-driven init script system. In addition, all derivatives have new artwork, both for usplash as well as for login managers and default backgrounds. In Ubuntu, GNOME has been updated to 2.16.0. In Kubuntu, Konversation 1.0 has been included. For Xubuntu, the XFce core applications have been upgraded to 4.4 release candidate 1.
