Building on the last post, I welcome the opportunity to share some of my experiences with deploying Linux in schools. It is a very broad topic however I will stay with the previous outline. First of all, it is a matter of migrating schools to Linux, not selling them. Second, the approach is different based on whether the school in located in a developing country, the EU or North America.

In my earlier post ‘How to Sell Linux’ I looked at three different ways how to popularize Linux and make it more mainstream as well as a household name. In the post I will look specifically at how I would sell Linux to schools, examining all the aspects of such a deployment and how I would do it and what distro and software I would use.

Ubuntu One is the next step in personal cloud computing, which in the developers view ” simplifies your digital life” to quote the homepage of the project. It is worth reading up on all the information on the site, however I will explain in detail the features of it as well as the upsides and downsides of using it.

GIMP is my image editor/creator of choice on both Windows and Linux however I prefer Photoshop on Mac. If you have any experience of Photoshop you will know how to use these tools, brushes and effects in it.

Sell- Verb (used with object)- to persuade or induce (someone) to buy or use something That’s one of the many definitions of the word sell, it is also the definition which allowed me to use the word in this context. This post is all about how we (as a community of Linux users) could persuade or induce someone or some people to use Linux in many different ways; whether is be in an organisation or for personal use.

For those not familiar, Hulu is a popular video playback site from NBC that streams many mainstream television shows right to your browser. The biggest problem with the site is that it blocks access for users outside the continental United States. Hulu isn’t the only site in the world that does this either. Many sites restrict access based on the IP Address that you are currently connected with.

Now Mac and Linux are often criticized for the lack of good games available under the two platforms compared to Windows. Perhaps Mac is moving in the right direction towards native big budget games however, Linux is not. We may have WINE ,which is something I will do a feature on, but it doesn’t replace the real game.

Over the past couple of weeks since Ubuntu 10.04 was released and I, along with all the other users, have been discovering how much like Mac OSX it is becoming. I solely mean the interface, like the buttons moving to the left and all that jazz. Another feature which, while trawling through my long list of programs in Ubuntu, is an awesome little feature in GNOME DO. Encase you haven’t used GNOME Do before or are just curious on how I would describe it, it is; an awesome little application launcher which can also be used to find files. It also supports many different plugins some of which let you; send emails, update your Twitter or Facebook, or last but not least control your media player whether it be Amarok or Rythmbox.

Is what Ubuntu 10.04 is claiming to be. And to be honest I agree with that claim totally however I think there could have been a little more done in the way of pre-installed video chatting clients like Skype.

Over the past few years many different browsers have been created and become very popular for example Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, however, there are many browsers which are generally unheard of among the majority of web users. Here are 5 of them.

Okay so if you have been reading my blog regularly you will have noticed that I love free, open source software, which in many cases is an alternative to popular, expensive and worst of all closed-source software. My review of the latest stable release of Ubuntu - Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. The designers over at Ubuntu have decided to go for something a little different from the browns and oranges of recent distros and have opted for a a purple default theme. Personally after trying the latest release I think things are looking and feeling very good.
