The latest version of Firefox, version 16, has returned to Mozilla's servers with the release of Firefox 16.0.1 after the discovery of vulnerabilities caused the organisation to remove the just-released open source web browser from circulation.
First release candidate for Samba 4 is available
The Samba developers are moving forward with their plans to deliver the next version of the Windows file, print and directory server and have announced that the first release candidate for Samba 4 is now ready.Version 4 of the free Windows services server has been in development for some time, and now includes a directory service that is compatible with Microsoft's Active Directory. The developers point out that this version continues to be unsuitable for production use, but that it can now be tested by interested Samba users.

In a new initiative, "LibreOffice HardHacks", the LibreOffice developers are being called on to take on the harder bugs in the LibreOffice code. Bjoern Michaelsen announced the programme, which is complementary to an earlier successful project "LibreOffice Easy Hacks", which set out to get the "low hanging fruit" bugs, the ones that would be easy to resolve and would bring new developers on board.

PostgreSQL Security Update 2012-08-17 released
The PostgreSQL Global Development Group today released security updates for all active branches of the PostgreSQL database system, including versions 9.1.5, 9.0.9, 8.4.13 and 8.3.20. This update patches security holes associated with libxml2 and libxslt, similar to those affecting other open source projects. All users are urged to update their installations at the first available opportunity.

Furore over changes to licensing policy at CA/Browser Forum
The Certification Authority Browser Forum's (CA/Browser Forum) new licensing policy has caused a furore within the very organisation meant to be responsible for guidelines and best practices for SSL certification. Prominent member organisations, including cryptography specialists RSA, BlackBerry manufacturer RIM and US carrier Verizon, are missing from the latest member list, updated in August. Entrust, a founder member of the organisation, has loudly expanded on the reasons for its withdrawal, which it explains is due to the organisation allegedly forcing members to make patented technologies available licence-free. In a posting to CA/Browser Forum's public mailing list, certificate provider StartCom has responded by calling the allegation "a lie which I'm sure you are very well aware of".
VirtualBox 4.2 nears with release candidate
With the arrival of a first release candidate, version 4.2 of VirtualBox is past its feature freeze and is nearly complete. VirtualBox 4.2, which entered beta testing earlier this month, will be the next major update to Oracle's open source desktop virtualisation application.
