What the project quickly realized is that code contributions alone are not enough and that the successful projects within OpenDaylight are the ones where there is significant ongoing involvement from developers and maintainers.

Overall Gopal said that having a community is key and that building community is hard.

"A community of one is not a community," Gopal said.

Jim Zemlin, the Executive Director of the Linux Foundation delivered one of the day's keynotes, starting off by telling the audience that technically he was Linux creator Linus Torvalds' boss. That however doesn't mean that he directs Torvalds activities. Zemlin said that his five year old daughter and Linux Torvalds are very much alike.

Mozilla today released Firefox 27, giving users of the open-source browser new security features and improved performance. There are 13 security advisories attached to the Firefox 27 release, four of them ranked as being critical. As is common in nearly all Firefox release updates, one of the critical updates is for a group of vulnerabilities that Mozilla labels "Miscellaneous memory safety hazards."

It's going to take a bit longer for users of the open-source Firefox web browser to get an overhauled user interface. Since early 2013, Mozilla developers have been teasing users with mockups and discussion about the new Australis Interface. At one point the plan was to have Australis debut in October as part of the Firefox 25 release, but that didn't happen.

Since Dell has its own Linux operating, that begs the question why does it need or want Cumulus Linux? As always, it's the details that matter.

Joshipura noted that the N-series routers are focussed on the needs of campus networks whereas the S6000 and S4810 are targeted at the data center.

Rivers stressed that there is also a difference in how Dell's N-series platform and Cumulus Linux in fact include and use Linux.

WordPress 3.8.1 Updates Open-Source CMS

The open-source WordPress content management system (CMS) project officially released its 3.8.1 update on the evening of Jan. 23 and provided users with bug fixes and stability updates. The 3.8.1 release is the first update to the WordPress 3.8 platform, which was originally released in mid-December 2013.

While WordPress administrators needed to manually update their sites from the WordPress 3.7 branch to the 3.8 release, the update for 3.8.1 for many sites is being performed entirely automatically.

Docker Raises $15M to Advance Open-Source Container Virtualization
