VMware has been one of the top contributors to the open-source OpenStack cloud platform over the last several years, and now the company is taking the next logical step by announcing its own OpenStack distribution. The new VMware Integrated OpenStack (VIO) offering is being formally announced at the VMworld conference today, providing a new option in the increasingly competitive space for OpenStack products and services.

Solomon Hykes started the open-source Docker project in March of 2013, and over the last year and half watched it grow into one of the most talked about new virtualization efforts in the industry.

In an interview with eWEEK at the LinuxCon conference here, Hykes discussed what's next for Docker and specifically how the security posture is set to get some significant enhancements.

CHICAGO—When Jay Rogers left the U.S. Marine Corps in 2004, he made a promise to his fallen soldier friends that he would go out into the world and make a difference. Speaking at the LinuxCon conference here, Rogers detailed how he has delivered on that promise with Local Motors, a startup that is set to enable a new era of automobiles.

Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, told eWEEK that for years his organization has been providing the Linux community with training, tutorials, mentoring programs and other educational outreach efforts. In fact, it was back in 2009 that the Linux Foundation first began its formal training programs. At the time, the Linux Foundation was not interested in doing any formal certification, but times have now changed.

The security breach of 2011 was a very valuable lesson to the Linux community, and many recent initiatives have been aimed at continuously improving the overall security profile, Ryabitsev told eWEEK. The move to two-factor authentication, however, is not a delayed reaction to the 2011 kernel.org attack, according to Ryabitsev. -

Linux kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman moderated the discussion and commented that Linux already runs everywhere. He asked Torvalds where he thinks Linux should go next.

"I still want the desktop," Torvalds said as the audience erupted into boisterous applause.

While Internet connectivity in the home is now mainstream, gateway security to protect users is not. It's a gap that startup Itus Networks is aiming to address with a Linux-powered home gateway device called the iGuardian. Before Itus can deliver the iGuardian though, the company needs to raise $125,000 on crowdfunding site Kickstarter in order to build the device. The Kickstarter campaign ends on Sept. 12, and as of Aug. 19, $61,000 has been raised. -

Server and cloud administrators have long had multiple virtualization options to choose from. In 2014, Docker container virtualization has emerged as yet another choice and according to research from IBM, it could well be the best choice in terms of performance.

Flocker is the result of more than five years of research, development and operational experience combining resilient, distributed, commodity storage with containers, Luke Marsden, CEO and co-founder of ClusterHQ, said.

"Two years ago, we launched a product called HybridCluster, an advanced container management platform based on FreeBSD Jails," Marsden told eWEEK. "Production customer deployments of HybridCluster have proven the resilience and scalability of our technology, and this experience has enabled our company, which we’ve rebranded as ClusterHQ, to move extremely quickly to solve the data problem for Docker and Linux."

"Quay.io will be a vital part of CoreOS, and we will continue to build out the offering," Polvi said. "Starting today, we are launching CoreOS Enterprise Registry, which is powered by Quay.io and available through our Managed Linux offering."

The name Panamax is a play on the Panama Canal, explained Lucas Carlson, chief innovation officer at CenturyLink. "Panamax is the maximum shipping container size for a container to go through the Panama Canal; so it created standards for shipping containers," Carlson told eWEEK. "We are trying to create application standards for Dockerized apps."

The Pineapple is a small-form-factor device that runs on Linux and is loaded with tools to help enable penetration testers to gain access to the WiFi networks of their targets. The new Mark V device improves on the predecessor Mark IV device by including both the Atheros AR9331 and Realtek RTL8187 wireless chipsets.

The popular open-source Docker container virtualization technology was born inside a company originally known as dotCloud. Docker Inc. today announced that it is shedding its legacy and selling the dotCloud business to German platform-as-a-service vendor cloudControl. Financial terms of the deal are not being publicly disclosed.

The open-source CoreOS Linux operating system hit a major milestone on July 25, issuing its first stable release. CoreOS is an Andreessen Horowitz-backed startup that offers the promise of a highly available operating system platform that is fully integrated with the Docker container virtualization technology.

Nginx Plus is the commercially supported enterprise release of the widely deployed open-source Nginx Web server. According to the June 2014 Netcraft Web Server Survey, Nginx is powering 134 million sites around the world. The first Nginx Plus release debuted back in August 2013, providing users with additional high-availability features on top of the open-source base. New versions of Nginx Plus are now released every three months. The Nginx Plus r4 release is based on the open-source Nginx 1.7.3 release, which was released on July 8.

One such innovation introduced in Firefox 31 is an eyedropper, which enables developers to easily identify the HTML value for a given color. Developers will now also be able to modify Web pages locally with a box model technology that enables manipulation of page layout attributes.
