Scott McNealy, chairman and chief executive of Sun Microsystems, has extended an open invitation to Microsoft and Red Hat to join the Java Community Process (JCP). Speaking at the 2004 JavaOne conference in San Francisco he also stressed that Sun, which has struggled financially lately, is not going away.

Minister spreads good word about Linux to nonprofits
Ordained minister Don Parris has plenty of experience spreading the good word -- about Linux. Parris is planting a new church in Charlotte, N.C., the Matheteuo Christian Fellowship. Matheteuo translates to "make disciples," and Parris has extended this directive to include Linux disciples. His PDF book, Penguin in the Pew has been downloaded more than 1,000 times.

The Dominance of Linux on the Server
Linux is not yet the dominant server OS in terms of units deployed or units shipped. Microsoft still has the lion's share of the market by all reasonable estimations. It is true that Linux market share figures are likely to be inaccurate because there is no easy way to count new Linux servers. The major problem is that it is possible to estimate those servers that come with Linux loaded, but not possible to count servers that were running something else (Windows or SCO UNIX or whatever) that were repurposed.

Bill Gates brushes off threat of Linux in Asia (AFP)
Microsoft founder Bill Gates brushed off the threat posed by Linux software in Asia and pushed for the use of the Windows operating system in Malaysia. Gates, who is in Malaysia for a one-day visit to meet Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, expressed Microsoft's willingness to help the country improve computer proficiency and boost its IT sector.
Irish bank chooses Sun and Linux
The Allied Irish Bank is migrating to the Linux desktop despite the relative immaturity of the platform Sun has finally received the seal of approval it has been seeking from a large private sector client following the announcement on Tuesday that Allied Irish Bank (AIB) is migrating 7,500 users to the Java Desktop System (JDS).
JBoss closing in on J2EE certification

Linux scores with new deals
Linux, the free operating system that's challenging Microsoft Corp.'s dominant Windows product, got a small but important boost yesterday as Seattle's RealNetworks Inc. announced agreements with several key Linux distributors. An analyst said the deals also show RealNetworks is learning how to profit in the Linux marketplace -- a tricky feat.
