Novell continues to open up

Novell made some recent moves to show its new open source colors to the industry. The vendor, which helped pioneer client/server technology with its NetWare brand, acquired two Linux companies last year, SuSE and Ximian. These moves were designed to bring Novell closer to Linux and open source software, as NetWare continued to lose market share to Linux in recent years.

Welcome to this year's 27th issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for the Debian community. Jordi Mallach reported that the transition of GNOME 2.6 into testing is nearly sorted out. Steve McIntyre explained that the CD/DVD creation process in debian-cd is very slow because large amounts of data are read and written, and because that data is checked with checksums several times.

Ballmer Vs. Linux, IBM and Novell

Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer came out swinging -- verbally and even physically at times, at the Worldwide Partner Conference where he mocked open source technology, Linux in particular, while touting opportunities on the company's own platforms.

PHP Development Team is would like to announce the immediate availability of PHP 4.3.8. This release is made in response to several security issues that have been discovered since the 4.3.7 release. All users of PHP are strongly encouraged to upgrade to PHP 4.3.8 as soon as possible. PHP 5.0 is not affected by these security issues.

NA Open Source GIS Conference Proceedings

The second MapServer Users Meeting and the first ever North American Open Source GIS Conference was held on June 9th to 11th in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The initial response from the Open Source GIS community is that the conference was a huge success. Conference proceedings and papers are now published on the event website.

Microsoft Project comes under open source attack

Software vendor Niku has launched an open source version of its Workbench Windows desktop-based project scheduling software, aiming to attack the market dominated by Microsoft Project. Open Workbench can be accessed free of charge, and the source code will be available for access and amendment at SourceForge next month, covered by the Mozilla open source licence.

Japan FTC: Microsoft is violating Antimonopoly Act

The Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) said Tuesday that certain provisions in license agreements between Microsoft Corp. and Japanese PC vendors violate Japan's antimonopoly code.

Red Hat restates earnings

Red Hat announced Tuesday it was restating revenue and earnings going back to 2002, as the company changes the way in which it accounts for subscription revenue. The Linux company, which recently reported the resignation of its chief financial officer, said it made its decision to change its revenue recognition after a discussion last month with its independent auditors, PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Novell Inc and IBM Corp have joined forces to hold technical workshops aimed at IT professionals in Malaysia and Singapore. Having closed the formal public review process for the latest Linux Standard Base -- a working group effort of the Free Standards Group aimed at driving and promoting standards to increase Linux compatibility for ISVs -- LSB 2.0 is set to be released soon, according to Jim Zemlin, named FSG director last May.
