Is Google Being Anti-Competitive?

  • ReadWriteHack; By Joe Brockmeier (Posted by jzb on Sep 13, 2011 8:19 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
It's not new to suggest that Google is too big, too influential, or trying to glom onto too many important bits of the Web. But some recent discussions on Reddit and news of Google Dart has raised the question again. Is Google being anti-competitive or threatening the open Web? More precisely, can Google do what makes sense as a business and not be (or be perceived as) anti-competitive?

A Germany company that provides DSL modems, using in part the Linux kernel, is trying to deny another company the right to modify GPL'ed software. The company, AVM Computersysteme Vertiebs GmbH (AVM), says that Cybits AG is violating its copyright by distributing Internet filtering software that modifies AVM's software. Harald Welte, who has spent a great deal of time pursuing GPL violations has intervened in the case.

Faced with sharing 75% of revenues from Amazon with Canonical, the Banshee maintainers have opted to disable the Amazon store by default when Banshee ships in Ubuntu 11.04. Instead, the media player will ship with support for purchasing music through Ubuntu One's service instead, and users will have to change the defaults to be able to support GNOME.</p>

Why Mozilla doesn't back Free Flash players

  • NetworkWorld; By Joe Brockmeier (Posted by jzb on Dec 14, 2010 3:21 PM EDT)
  • Groups: Mozilla
Despite Apple's best efforts to make it go away, the Web is still littered with Flash-based sites and content. The lack of an open source alternative to Adobe's Flash player is still a major pain point for Linux users and vendors, and the proprietary player is a big source of bug reports for Mozilla. Which brings the question: Why hasn't Mozilla backed one of the projects to create an open source player?

Five reasons to be grumpy about 2010

Maybe it's the post-holiday letdown, but looking back on 2010 I'm not sure the open source community has that much to be grateful for this year. Not only have we missed another year for the Linux desktop, but there's been plenty to gripe about in 2010.

  • Story Type: Tutorial
Back in May, we provided a step-by-step guide to sorting out and shoring up a digital audio library. As several readers noted, audio collections aren't the only media stores that can get out of control. Your digital photos may also be an unsorted mess, split up over several directories (or even machines), with inconsistent file names, duplicates, and a host of other problems. This weekend, why not sift through the clutter and get the whole collection in top shape before the camera comes home with a full memory card from the next big cookout?

Easy Linux backups with Lucky Backup

  • Story Type: Tutorial
We would all like to think that, since we are using Linux, we will never really need a backup of our data. Now, let's look at this realistically. Even if your OS is 100% rock solid, with nary a nanosecond of downtime, that hardware running that OS can not possibly give 100% forever. Add to that the irresistible urge to upgrade hardware and you have the serious makings for the need to back up.
