While the open-source OpenStack cloud platform is software, like all software at the bottom layer it requires hardware to run on. OpenStack vendor Mirantis first announced its Unlocked Appliances initiative in July 2015 as an effort working with hardware vendors to build OpenStack cloud appliances and has been growing the program ever since.

There are a lot of different ways to deploy an open-source OpenStack cloud, and one of the best, ironically is with OpenStack itself, with a project known as OpenStack on OpenStack (OOO), or just simply TripleO.

Container Standardization Efforts Advance With Image Specification

The Linux Foundation's Open Container Initiative (OCI) is taking a major step today, starting a project to define and ultimately standardize an open container image format specification for containers.

OCI was first announced in June 2015 as an effort bringing Docker and its container rivals together with the goal of creating a standards-based approach to advancing the container market. The initial specification effort from OCI is a runtime specification for containers. The Docker Engine 1.11 update, released April 13, is the first Docker update that complies with OCI.
