Free 96-page report details benefits of Open Source software

Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC) has published a 96-page report on Open Source software and its potential benefits to business and government. This whitepaper provides an introduction to the report and its findings. At the conclusion, a link is provided for downloading the full report, entitled "Open Source: Open for Business."

Preview: Fedora Core 3 Test 2

Fedora Core 3 Test2 was released today, and so here's a chance to preview the software. I've been eager to try out Gnome 2.8 and KDE 3.3, so I tried to install them on my Core 2 box, which resulted in a severe package dependency crisis, so since Test 2 was released today I figured I would just reformat and install it for kicks, and to get my KDE 3.3. Sun Close to a Linux Purchase

Sun Microsystems is in talks to purchase a profitable Linux distributor, sources have told internetnews.com. Sources close to the discussions said they expected that company to be embedded Linux player MontaVista, but cautioned that the deal wasn't finalized and talks could still break down.

Celebrating one month of KDE 3.3 out in the wild, userinstinct put together a usability review with user testing. "Based on feedback from our test group, the default settings for a number of KDE parameters differ from what is usually expected and desired by users. Providing better defaults would reduce the time users spend looking for configuration settings and would provide a better "out-of-the-box" experience."

Windows is 'free' in Iran, but even there is an increasing move towards Linux, according to an AFP report. Apparently, because Iran refuses to abide by international copyright laws, pirated copies of Windows make the product free and everyone uses it.

Sun on Wall Street

Today, Sun Microsystems is holding a news conference in New York City to tout "a new vision" for selling Solaris-based products to Wall Street and the financial services community. In the words of President and COO Jonathan Schwartz, Sun is focused on "reengaging" customers on Wall Street. He promises new technologies, new strategies and "connecting of the dots" for customers. Sound familiar? It should.

Recently Mailroute, a company that provides virus and spam filtering for businesses, switched its GNU/Linux-based servers from SCSI to Serial ATA disks and saved itself a lot of money. The switchover wouldn't have been possible without Broadcom's new SATA RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) controller, the RAIDCore BC4852.
