A Happy New Year to all of you! We hope you all had a nice holiday season, ate yummy meals and enjoyed some quality time with your family and friends. While doing exactly the same as everybody, the Amarok developers did also sneak out in the middle of the night to sit at their computers and add a bugfix here, a usability improvement there, and polish all around to make sure you will truly enjoy our new release: Amarok 2.2.2!

I've recently found some patched (by mriya3) Nautilus packages for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic (Nautilus 2.28.1) which has "Undo" and "Redo" actions integrated - a really important feature missing in Nautilus. I've been using it for a while and it works great!

With a bit of a delay, Ubuntu Tweak 0.5 has been finally released. We already posted a quick what's new guide (initially, 0.5 was supposed to be released on 1th of January, so read about most of the new features there), but let's have an even quicker look at what's new:

Ubuntu Customization Kit is a GUI tool that helps you customizing official Ubuntu Live CDs (including Kubuntu/Xubuntu and Edubuntu) to your needs. You can add any package to the live system, for example language packs, or applications.

I am proud to announce that OpenShot Video Editor 1.0 has just been released! This release is jam-packed full of new features, bug fixes, and some shiny new graphics! We hope you enjoy it!

For a shell music player, I used to love CMus (I still like it a lot), but I've found a similar - probably better - command line music player which is actually a MPD client: Ncmpcpp. Ncmpcpp (Ncmpc++) is an ncurses MPD client inspired by Ncmpc. Ncmpcpp has an UI very similar to ncmpc's one, but it provides new useful features such as support for regular expressions in search engine, extended song format, items filtering, fetching artist's info from last.fm, tag editor, ability to sort playlist, local filesystem browser, song lyrics and other minor functions.

The Ubuntu wiki points out that a new complete beginners manual for Ubuntu is on it's way. The manual will include information on anything you need to know after installing Ubuntu and very useful how-to's for beginners, all written in a user-friendly way in a PDF file.

Keryx is a portable, open source and cross-platform package manager for APT-based (Ubuntu, Debian) systems. It provides a graphical interface for gathering updates, packages, and dependencies for offline computers. Other than being very easy to use, there are three other reasons why I really like Keryx: * You can edit it's sources, so you can use PPAs and other unofficial repositories (under Project > Edit Sources); * When clicking on a package, it's dependencies are displayed, along with the direct download link for the package in question. * On the second computer, you can see the packages for which there are updates available, before downloading them.

When we released our pre-alpha version into the wild last week, we told you that a Unix release would follow later. Today, as a new year's present, we'd like to give you the chance to play with Opera 10.5 on Unix. We also have a little extra for those of you on Windows and Unix: this build includes support for the video element!

A post on the Ubuntu Tweak blog points out that the new 0.5 version release should come today: I plan to make it online at the the last day of 2009: I don’t want to take this task to the new year, because I’ve been developed for them over half year! Ubuntu Tweak 0.5 will come with a redesigned UI (but version 0.6 will suffer major UI changes), XFCE specific features and most importantly: the ability to fetch online database to keep the ppplication information up-to-date. That means that you will be able to keep your applications and sources up-to-date without updating Ubuntu Tweak.

Speed Dreams is an open source, multi platform (works on Windows and Linux) motorsport simulator. It was forked in late 2008 from the famous open racing car simulator TORCS, in order to implement exciting new features, cars, tracks and AI opponents, to make a more enjoyable game for the player, as well as constantly improving visual and physics realism.

The VLC team has been working (or actually, they call it "support" so they might not do this entirely on themselves) on a new project for quite some time, called VideoLAN Movie Creator, a free video editing software offering features to realize semi-professional quality movies, but with the aim to stays simple and user-friendly.

I have played a lot with rTorrent and wTorrent (which I've already posted how to set up) and also ruTorrent and various Web UIs for rTorrent but I've came to the conclusion that the best way (for me at least) for remote Bittorrent download is Transmission Remote GUI - I've been using it for a few days now and love it. Please note that I've only tested it on a remote Debian server but I've adapted everything for Ubuntu so it should work for it too. In this article, I will cover installing and configuring transmission-daemon in a headless (but should work on a normal Debian / Ubuntu install too) Debian or Ubuntu machine.

Ubuntu Software Center (initially Ubuntu Software Store) was released with Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and it currently has only a few of the features it was designed for, being just stage 1 out of 4. The Ubuntu Software Center is a graphical utility for package management in Ubuntu. In version 1, it builds on the basic philosophy of Add/Remove Applications with an easier-to-use design. In version 2, the primary goals are to take the place of Synaptic and apturl, and to include ratings and reviews of software. Let's take a deeper look to what we'll have with Ubuntu Software center version 2 and more.

The reason I am writing this post is because I tried many howto's which didn't work and I eventually ended up combining some to get both rtorrent and wtorrent to install and run on my Debian 5 Lenny VPN. In case you don't know: wtorrent is a WebUI for rtorrent, a command line Bittorrent client. Be aware, there are quite a few steps on doing this, so you need a lot of patience and time. Let's get started!

Starting with Ubuntu Karmic, Grub2 is used (for clean installs for now), so the old way of recovering GRUB has become obsolete. Here is the way to recover GRUB2 (in case you break it, install Windows after Linux and it breaks the GRUB2, etc.)

A local DNS cache can help for faster browsing since you’re caching the DNS request instead of attempting that request multiple times. The internet speed will not get any faster, but the browsing speed will improve, because on each website there are usually quite a few DNS requests for which the local DNS cache will be used, bringing the query time to almost 0.

Bluetile is a tiling window manager for X based on xmonad. Bluetile automatically arranges the windows to tile the screen, maximizing screen use. "Sushi, huh?" is an application which serves the same purpose as the command we posted about two weeks ago, to get a list of packages and dependencies for offline installation in Ubuntu, but many will love it since it comes with a - I almost wanted to say GUI - an web-based interface which runs on your machine, and it can download the dependencies for the packages you want to install, for the following Linux distributions: Mandriva, openSUSE, Fedora (and obviously, Ubuntu and Debian). But "Sushi, huh?" can also run on both Linux and Windows, meaning you can download the packages with dependencies from Windows too.

Google has launched Google Public DNS as an alternative domain name service for any Internet user. Designed to replace the DNS services provided by ISPs or companies, Google says that its DNS will be faster and more secure than many other DNSs, and won't filter content. The goals for Google's new DNS are: speed, security and validity.
