Window Indicators will be just like the current Panel Indicators: they will have an icon which indicates the state and clicking it brings up a menu.

  • Groups: Ubuntu; Story Type: News Story
VLC Media Player 1.1.0 Pre 2 was released a few days ago and today I finally had some time to package it and upload it to the WebUpd8 PPA. Ubuntu 10.04 will be released in a few days but unfortunately VLC 1.1.0 won't be officially available until Ubuntu 10.10 so installing it from a PPA (or compiling it yourself) is the only way to use the latest VLC Media Player in Ubuntu.

Medibuntu (Multimedia, Entertainment & Distractions In Ubuntu) is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution for legal reasons (copyright, license, patent, etc). The Medibuntu server has been down for about 3 days now and this wouldn't have been a very big deal normally, but with Ubuntu 10.04 final release due in a few days, a lot of people are upgrading to Lucid and they need Medibuntu. Here is how to 'fix' it.

  • Groups: Ubuntu; Story Type: News Story
The simplified / elementary Nautilus idea firstly begun with the 100 paper cuts for Ubuntu Karmic and it stated that the menu and columns are too big and take away space for the really important stuff. Unfortunately, a fix was never released. Here is where Nautilus Elementary comes in: a Nautilus patched for simplicity. Nautilus Elementary 2.30 for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx comes with some nice new features, such as an option to set the toolbar either as vertical or horizontal, a new view_switcher mini widget and also some extra options you can set from within Nautilus (and of course, the features that were in Karmic too).

Online Office In Ubuntu With Zoho Webservice

Canonical developer Jamie Bennett presented a new project 2 days ago: Zoho Webservice, which is basically the online office suite Zoho (which comes with tools such as: Presentations, Spreadsheet and Word Processor), but with Ubuntu integration. Zoho was chosen over Google Docs because it does not require the user to log in to use it, so using Zoho Webservice in Ubuntu, all you have to do is double click a file and read / edit it online.

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Beta 2 doesn't come with drastic visual changes, but there are quite a few minor improvements and tweaks. In this post I'll try to cover all the changes made since Beta 1. If you've installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Alpha or Beta 1 and kept upgrading, you already have all the changes in this post. If not, here is what's new (visually) in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Beta 2:

What To Do After Installing Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx? Run This Script!

  • Groups: Ubuntu; Story Type: News Story
Back when Ubuntu Karmic was released, I translated a script which helps new user set up a few things most people do when they first install Ubuntu. Today I updated the script for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and also added a few more tweaks so it makes the transition to Ubuntu 10.04 easier and less time consuming.

Bisigi Themes Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Testing PPA (And Lots Of Updates)

The Bisigi project includes 13 amazing Gnome themes for Ubuntu which comes with a PPA repository for easy installation. Today, these beautiful themes got a new testing Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx PPA (not the same as the main PPA) and the themes will probably be moved to the main PPA repository once the developers are sure there are no bugs in this transition.

UbuntuOne Gets Contacts Mobile Phone Sync Support [But It's Not Free]

  • Web Upd8; By Andrew Dickinson (Posted by hotice on Apr 5, 2010 7:04 AM EDT)
A recent message on the UbuntuOne mailing list announces that Canonical has teamed up with Funambol, an established software stack that synchronizes thousands of mobile phones and other devices who have built a community around different client plugins, virtually supporting the majority of the existing software on all platforms that have contacts (Thunderbird, Outlook, Mac OS X Mail, etc). That means that UbuntuOne gets mobile phones sync support, but unfortunately the new service will only be part of the UbuntuOne paid plans. The service can already be used by everyone as it's already in public alpha. If you want to try it out, you'll get a free 30-days trial but these 30 days of trial will only start counting once Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will be released so until then you can use it for free.

Possible New GNOME 3 System Status Area Changes [Mockups]

Gnome 2.30 was released a few days ago which means the next version will be (or should be) Gnome 3 (which will come with Gnome Shell). I recently came across some Notification Area mockups which might become reality. Gnome 3 might start using monochrome colors in the System Status Area - Ubuntu style (or we could call it Mac OSX style):
