Debian picks new project head

With about 1000 votes of active developers of the Debian team Sam Hocevar was chosen as the new Debian Project Leader. Mr. Hocevar, who has been a user of Debian for more than 10 years and a Debian developer since 2000, will replace Anthony Towns, who -- in a field comprising seven candidates in all -- had sought reelection. Anyone who wants to know the results of the ballot (and is not a by any chance a statistician) can make an attempt to decode the Debianesque way the results have been made public. A tip: The electoral procedure chosen did not restrict the participants to casting a single vote for an ideal candidate...

Our Illustrious publisher has fixed an aggravating bug that broke links in the discussion forums/threads. This includes retroactively fixing broken links, so that previously broken links should now work. I have tested the links on the most problematic thread (http://lxer.com/module/forums/t/24995/) and can say confidently that the links work now.

Mandriva puts Linux on USB stick.

Now the geeks can have a full-featured Linux OS booted from a USB stick or thumb drive. Linux distributor Mandriva's Flash 4GB provides Mandriva Linux 2007 KDE 32-bit, which needs no installation - being ready to boot off the USB 2.0 stick. Plug in the stick, turn on the PC, and Mandriva Linux is ready to use in a few seconds.

Palm fesses up to Linux Treo plans

Palm, best known for Treo smartphones powered by Palm OS and Windows Mobile, is likely to ship Linux phones this year, confirmed CEO Ed Collagan today at Palm's "Analyst and Investor Day." Palm's Linux platform will add reliability, performance, and stability to Palm's smartphones, Collagan said.

Pioneer Linux fails to excite

In November, Techalign released its Pioneer Linux distribution, based on Kubuntu, and available in several paid versions and one free version. I tested the recent Pioneer Linux Basic Release 2 (R2), which is based on Kubuntu Edgy 6.10. Apart from a few minor cosmetic changes and some additional applications, Pioneer isn't very different from a stock Kubuntu.
