SA Linux trainers Linux Holdings have launched a full range of LPI training courses that will be taught using online and correspondence methods. Providing the courses online with a mix of chat, forums and training materials will allow the company to keep their prices down as well as give students longer-term support.

"We love openSUSE, but we hate openSUSE's package management problems," Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, DesktopLinux.com's resident Linux curmudgeon, reports from his vacation. But there's good news: a fix is coming soon, he says.

Novell has announced the availability of the SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 operating system for servers and desktops. Novell plans on shipping the OS on Monday, which is going to be the first full release of SUSE Linux since the summer of 2004.

Opera Software reports that its embedded browser for devices is available for sublicensing with a Linux-based software stack for IPTVs and IP-STBs (Internet protocol TVs and set-top boxes) from Amino spin-off IntAct. Linspire CEO Kevin Carmony announced on the Freespire forum website July 16 that Beta 1 of Freespire has been released -- about two weeks earlier than anticipated. Freespire, a no-cost version of the Linspire Debian-based operating system, features a KDE desktop and a 2.6.14 kernel.

Open source software will gain momentum faster within the government sector than it will in other markets, according to Government Insights, an IDC company. Government Insights estimates a 30 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of open source software as part of total IT spending through 2009. The analysts predict an accompanying paradigm shift in how governments develop and buy enterprise solutions.

Coinciding with its local roadshow, Novell today announced the woldwide release of Suse Linux Enterprise 10, the company's latest release of its operating system that it is hoping will win over big market share in both the desktop and server sectors.

The first BETA of Freespire Linux was released on Friday. Freespire is a no-cost version of the Linspire operating system based on Linux and Open Source.
