Pinguy OS - Ubuntu After A Week Of Customizations [Review]
Pinguy OS is a remastered Ubuntu with a lot of useful default applications - great for those who don't like to do a lot of tweaking and want an OS that "just works". Pinguy OS doesn't rebrand Ubuntu, so you'll have the same Plymouth theme, the Ubuntu logo for the menu and so on. It's just Ubuntu with a lot of default applications and PPAs enabled by default. You'll probably think you don't need Pinguy since there's already Linux Mint which does a great job at enhancing Ubuntu, but you'll notice a lot more useful stuff in Pinguy OS. And you won't miss Linux Mint either because Pinguy OS comes with the Linux Mint main menu and even the Mint repositories enabled by default.
New GNOME Shell Mockups Look Like Unity, Nautils Elementary
Since GNOME 3.0 has been delayed until March, 2011, it seems there's enough time to rethink the way GNOME Shell looks, especially since a lot of people don't like it (especially from the usability point of view). Some new GNOME Shell mockups were uploaded to GIT recently, showing a lot of similarities with Ubuntu / UNE:
Manhattan OS (Based On Ubuntu) Makes It Easier To Convert Users To Linux [Review]
Manhattan OS comes with basically everything you need and looks simply amazing so if you want to convert a friend to Linux, this is the distro you should suggest. Sure, if you're a geek who likes to customize and install everything for himself, this may not seem like much but remember that most people never customize anything more than the background so the default application selection and look is very important.
Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.5 Released, Features PPA Purge Integration
A new version of Ubuntu Tweak has been released today: 0.5.5. There's no official announcement yet, but the new version is now available in the Ubuntu Tweak stable PPA. Looking and the BZR changelog, there's only one new major feature in Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.5: PPA Purge (which was also available in the WebUpd8 PPA by the way), which you can now use from within Ubuntu Tweak.

VLC Default In Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat?
It seems the Kubuntu developers aren't big fans of Kaffeine 1.0 and want a new default media player for Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.
7 Of The Best Ubuntu Terminal (Fixed Width) Fonts
You asked for it so here it is: a post with 7 of the best Ubuntu terminal (fixed width or monospace) fonts. I say 'Ubuntu' because the installation instruction for most of these fonts are for Ubuntu.
Firefox 4.0 Beta 2 Pre Brings App Tabs [For Linux Too!]
The latest Firefox 4.0 Beta 2 pre brings a long awaited feature: app tabs. This feature is very similar to the "Pin tab" option in Chrome: the app tabs use only favicons for the tabs and all the links you open from an app tab are opened to the right of all the app tabs.
Unity, Ubuntu Software Center And Sound Indicator Video And Screenshots [Ubuntu / UNE 10.10 Maverick Meerkat]
Unity received yet another update in Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 Maverick Meerkat yesterday. This version partially fixes the application search in the Unity application launcher and file browser - also known as Dash (the file search actually looks completely fixed). Also, Unity doesn't display all the files at once anymore - for this, a new toggle button was introduced for both the files and applications. I took this opportunity to record a video with Unity (along with the new AppMenu, also known as Global Menu) so WebUpd8 readers can see where Ubuntu Netbook Edition stands right now. Since I promised this when Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 2 was released, I also recorded the new Ubuntu Software Center. And finally to make this complete, you can also see the new Sound Indicator in action.
RedshiftGUI Protects Your Eyes When Working At Night
At first it was F.lux. Then came Redshift (inspired by F.lux) which also got a GTK version but only for switching it on/off. And now, a Redshift fork called RedshiftGUI finally brings a GUI for customizing everything. But what are these? All the applications mentioned above serve only one purpose: to change the color temperature of your screen by the time of day, making it easy for your eyes. This is achieved by entering your location and then Redshift (in the case of this post: RedshiftGUI) takes care of the rest.
What Font To Use For Your Ubuntu Desktop? Try These!
A lot of people have been asking us to write an article on what fonts to use in Ubuntu, so here it is. These are my favourite fonts and among the few I can use but of course that may not be the case for everybody, so you can share your favourite font(s) in the comments!

You probably already know about the NotifyOSD packages patched by Leolik (Sukochev Roman) which allow you to customize the notification bubles (colors, font and so on). Well, the patched NotifyOSD PPA got an update which adds further customizations such as: display the notifications in different corners of the screen and also finally fixes the timeout option which was broken since... forever in Ubuntu.
Minitunes (A.k.a. 'Just Another Music Player, Only Better') 0.1 Released! [Ubuntu PPA]
About 3 months ago, we were telling you about Mininutes, a new music player created by the Minitube developer. Today, Flavio announced the first version of Minitunes - 0.1. Since it's still very young, don't except a huge list of features. Besides, the whole purpose of Minitunes is not to offer the user all the options one can think of, but play the music - with style!

Well, it's basically a quick launcher - an application you can use to easily control different applications and/or actions via plugins. New plugins in Kupfer 201 include Opera Mail, SSH Hosts, Filezilla, Getting Things GNOME, Vim, and also some new options for already existing plugins such as Firefox: options include visites sites, Thunar: action Send To..., support for Traker 0.8 and many more.
Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Alpha 2 Released (What's New And Screenshots Inside)
There are no changes to the Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat artwork: no new Light Themes version, wallpaper, no new icons or anything like that - those usually come very late in the development cycle. But there are still some changes since Alpha 1 in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 worth mentioning. Read on!
Opera 10.60 Has FINALLY Been Released
Opera 10.60 was released today and this time it includes Linux too, besides the Windows and MacOS X builds. Opera 10.60 comes with a new version of Opera's rendering engine: Presto 2.6.30 and includes HTML5 fixes such as Geolocation and Offline Applications as well as WebM support. Opera 10.60 is the first final version of a browser that comes with WebM support by default (that's what the Opera devs say, but I don't agree since Epiphany had WebM with no modifications to the browser whatsoever).
Ubuntu Software Center Receives Major User Interface Update, More [Ubuntu 10.10]
An update in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat today brings a changed look for the main Ubuntu Software Center panel. The main view was completely redesigned: the category buttons are now smaller, the Featured category was moved to the bottom and it doesn't have the next/previous buttons anymore. Also, a new category called "What's New" was created - this will be the category where the new applications from the extras.ubuntu.com repository we were telling you about will be available.
The Unity Launcher Looks Gorgeous [Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10]
The Ubuntu logo in the top left corner is not for Expose anymore, and it now triggers the Unity launcher which comes with 2 tabs: one for the applications - which you can see in the screenshot above, and another tab for files grouped by day and by type, using the power of Zeitgeist
