Mannheim starts Linux migration

The German City of Mannheim this week outlined its migration plan to the Linux platform. Or, as the town in the grand-duchy of Baden puts it, “we are aiming to become fit for the future." A year ago, the German town at the junction of the Rhine and Neckar Rivers already got the go-ahead of the project.

Unix/linux Desktop KDE 3.4.3 fixes bugs

The KDE Project has published Version 3.4.3 of its Unix/Linux Desktop. According to an announcement by the developers the release in question is a maintenance release which removes bugs that have been discovered since the previous version. KDE was meanwhile available in 51 languages, the announcement says; a KDE language pack for Afrikaans had been released recently. Information on the details of the changes in KDE 3.4.3 are to be found in the Changelog.

Stirling moves payroll to Red Hat

Stirling University has moved its SAP payroll and human resources (HR) system to an open source Red Hat Linux operating system.

The university implemented the Red Hat system when the server running the HR department’s SAP application started to suffer performance problems following an upgrade.

Mysql update beckons big business

A new version of open-source database MySQL will be released next month, aimed at attracting more businesses. Version 5 is the most significant update in the database's history, the company behind it said. It adds a number of features considered important for companies that have long been available from market leaders Oracle, IBM and Microsoft. Chief among them are triggers, views and stored procedures.

KDE 3.4.3 Released

KDE 3.4.3 has been released. This release includes many bugfixes and increased translation coverage compared to previous versions.

Before I could pen down this post, I was cautioned about the “flames” I would encounter from Mac aficionados. It is indeed preposterous to assume that there could be anything better than a Mac. An electronic engineering student in Brazil has published a design for a small SBC (single-board computer) that runs Linux. Flavio Ribeiro's SBC uses a 180MHz ARM processor, an Altera Cyclone FPGA, and a 3-megapixel Micron CMOS sensor. It targets machine vision, surveillance, and other imaging applications.
