Linux for migrants: Zorin OS

  • Linux notes from DarkDuck (Posted by darkduck on Jan 23, 2012 4:20 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: Linux
Some Linux distributions try to find their own way in arrangement of the user desktop. Take, for example, Ubuntu with Unity. Whatever is your opinion about this Desktop Environment, you can’t deny that it brought some fresh ideas as to how to organize the user’s desktop. At the other pole are Linux distros which intentionally adjust their look to something familiar to users of other operating systems, being it Windows or Mac. Zorin OS is one of those. The intent of such distros is to smooth the transition for users wishing to migrate from Windows to Linux.

There are different general directions in Linux distribution development, taking into consideration the dilemma of free vs non-free software. Some developers don’t bother with this dilemma at all and include useful software in their distribution. Others do not turn off non-free software initially, but allow users to decide themselves. They place non-free and restricted software in separate repositories. And another stance is taken by developers who stick to free software only. The developers from this last group sometimes even get recognition from the Free Software Foundation, who include the distribution in the list of approved ones.

Simply SimplyMEPIS 11.0

The general impression which SimplyMEPIS 11.0 left on me during Live USB run was it is rather boring. Yes, from my personal point of view, it is “just another Debian spin”.

Names of operating systems and applications in the world of Open Source are not always as good as they originally appear. Is there any solution? I did a little research and found a solution...

Three simple steps to change page numbering style in OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice Writer.

Most of us are used to seeing page numbers as Arabic numbers like 1-2-3-...-10-11-12 and so on. But what if you wanted to see numbering in Roman style: I-II-III-...-X-XI-XII? Is there any option in LibreOffice or OpenOffice.org to do so?

Lightweight Giant Debian XFCE

What is Debian XFCE Live and how does it compare on the market? This is a distribution that we need to respect, because it is stable, universal and reliable. This is valid for anything in the Debian Stable branch, which is currently Squeeze. But usage of the XFCE Desktop Environment on top of Debian Squeeze has its own points, positive and negative.

Austrumi 2.4.5: Small and Mighty

For people who want to carry a portable Slackware-based system in their pocket or who want to have a very small Slackware-based system on their desktops.

Mint Cocktail: Mojito or Molotov

You can enjoy this operating system, and think it is a nice Mint-flavoured Mojito. Or, you can steer clear from it, like you would a bomb or a Molotov cocktail.

Every user has his own preferences, of course. That's why arguments over Linux distributions and desktop environments will never end. People will always have differences of opinion. There is a way to determine a current leader, though. The most democratic way is voting. I announced voting for the best XFCE-based Linux distribution on the 1st of December 2011, and gave visitors of my blog 2 weeks to vote. Let's look at the results.

Xubuntu 11.10. It Came To Stay

How does Xubuntu compete with other Linux distributions I have tried so far in either Live and, more important, installed versions? My opinion is that it leads the race, at least among XFCE distributions.

Xubuntu 11.10: Unbelievable Easyness of Humanity

Humanity can take several shapes and forms. Everybody understands it differently. Same for Ubuntu, which is "humanity" in some African languages. Somebody only understands it with Unity interface. Somebody cannot live without KDE, and they are fans of Kubuntu type of "humanity". Somebody prefer light and easy types of it, and their choice is Xubuntu.

LiveUSB and LiveCD: devil OpenBSD twins

LiveCD and Live USB OpenBSD did not work for me. I could not accomplish any task I usually do during the OS tests. Such a frustration...This OS may suit somebody with vast Linux / Unix experience. But this OS is definitely not for beginners who want to get their computer up and running in new safe and secure environment.

Argentinean Tango with Gecko

The Linux distribution I am going to talk about today is not brand-new. Actually, it is already more than 10 years old! Its name comes from the gecko, which lives in Northern Argentina. Do you have enough hints already? Not? Then I'll tell you the name...
