GSmartControl is a really useful Linux app to check the health of your hard disk drive. GSmartControl is basically a graphical user interface for smartctl, which is a tool for querying and controlling SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) data on modern hard disk drives. Only ATA drives including both PATA and SATA are supported for now.

Now, the default Dragon Media Player of KDE have a serious competition in Bangarang. Dragon player is simple yet totally functional, which I think are the most basic trait to became the default in any desktop environment. On the other hand Bangarang is new, it's good and it is rapidly improving.

Firefox 4.0 beta 2 pre is now available in silverwave PPA and it is devoid of any kind of errors, which is unfortunately the case with ubuntu-mozilla-daily PPA currently. Silverwave PPA will give you only monthly updates and so instead of getting swamped by daily updates, you will get the latest Firefox 4.0 releases every month.

Most of you probably haven't heard about Clementine before. But every linux music enthusiast must be aware of Amarok 1.4, which for many like me, was the best open source music player for Linux. Even though it was KDE app, I used it as my default music player in Ubuntu Gnome. It was that good. But everything changed once KDE developers decided to rewrite Amarok.

A quick collection of my favorite RSS feed reader applications for Ubuntu desktop. Even though it is totally out of place in my Gnome desktop, Akregator is my favorite among the lot. But after exploring a bit further, I found feed readers like Yarssr really good and easy to use. So here is my list of favorite 4 feed reader applications for Ubuntu.

If you like mplayer, you will love SMPlayer and Gnome-Mplayer. Both SMplayer and Gnome-Mplayer are really good MPlayer front-ends and they do work great. SMplayer has long been my favorite multimedia player in Ubuntu and we have even featured SMplayer among the most wanted multimedia apps for Ubuntu.

Quake is a first person shooter game and design inspiration for Guake Terminal Emulator came from consoles in computer games such as Quake which slide down from the top of the screen when a key is pressed, and slide back up when the key is pressed again. Guake is originally inspired from KDE's Yakuake.

Pinta is a drawing/editing program modeled after Paint.NET. Pinta is pitched as a simplified alternative to GIMP for casual users. It is still undergoing rapid development and latest Pinta 0.4 was released a few days ago with a number of major improvements and bug fixes.

KDE Software Compilation 4.5 Release Candidate 2 (KDE SC 4.5 RC2) is released. The final version of the KDE SC release will be available by August 2010. This latest KDE release will introduce "improvements across the board in terms of innovative new features, greater ease of use, accessibility, good looks, better networking and further internationalization", according to the KDE team.
