Mostly, it comes down to the tools you employ to navigate this interconnected universe of ours. The most popular tools are owned by major technology companies, the same outfits that give government agencies free, warrantless access to your data.

Linpus Lite is one of those distributions that I’ve always hoped will be done right, considering that it is published by a commercial entity. They get the big picture, but then it comes to delivering sane and sensible defaults and implementing features that a modern OS should have, they miss the mark.

HY-D-V1 Desktop is a new desktop interface built atop GNOME 3 using a combination of Webkit, JavaScript, Python and HTML. It is the desktop environment on Hybryde Fusion, a Linux desktop distribution based on Ubuntu Desktop.

From the release number, you can probably guess that it is based on Ubuntu Desktop 13.04. But what you cannot guess from the name or release number is that it ships with its own desktop environment called HY-D-V1. It also makes it super easy to test-drive other desktop environments from the same installation, without ever rebooting the computer or logging out of the current desktop.

What I typically look for in desktop distributions are a good graphical installation, a sane and sensible default desktop configuration that just work, and all the graphical tools that will make managing the desktop easy for all users, especially those not familiar or not willing to use the command-line.
