Windows vs Linux: a modern desktop comparison

We've put together a series of Windows XP, SUSE 9.3 and Ubuntu 5.04 desktop screen shots as a side-by-side comparison of some of the common desktop features available in the modern operating system desktop.

Windows users need not fear making the switch to Linux in this day and age, with the mature desktop environments currently available. There are features available in Windows that are not present in the KDE and GNOME environments, and visa-versa, but the most common features used in Windows are present in Linux. This comparison is based on a default Windows XP installation, the SUSE 9.3 Live DVD and the Ubuntu 5.04 Live CD, without additional software being installed. So we begin.

Stephen writes: "Are you people not reading the press before you publish articles trashing us? Does Google News not exist where you live? Let me put on the cranky pants here...."

"Now, I've only been the director responsible for JDS at Sun for a few months now, so I admit I don't know the history around what promises were made to Tom and Sam. Sometimes things are beyond our control, but if we promised you something, we should have at least given you an explanation on why we had to break that promise. So if that's what happened, let me be the one to apologize."

Stephen, we like the way you refer to us as "you people". We also wonder if you bothered to read the article.

Massachusetts' CIO defends move to OpenDocument

BOSTON -- Open standards and open source software (OSS) got political on Monday when Linda Hamel, the general counsel for the Massachusetts Information Technology Department (ITD), suggested that groups that oppose the OpenDocument file format standard might be influenced by Microsoft.

"If we look at all the groups … in most we are finding Microsoft funds behind that group," Hamel said, although she did make the point to exclude those groups that represented disabled government employees from her criticism.

Open source start-ups make their pitch - in public

The Network World staff wrote below a large Microsoft Ad: "Three open source start-up executives Tuesday showed their daring by making pitches to potential customers. What made them daring is that they did it in front of dozens of attendees at the Open Source Business Conference in Newton, Mass."

"Not surprisingly, the customer panelists who agreed to participate are from organizations that use open source software, though some to much larger extents than others. Their responses to the new companies ranged from practically inviting them in to show off their software to telling them to get back in a couple of years."

Stealing From Google

  • Story Type: News Story
I have a confession to make: I've been stealing from Google. With $1.578 billion in revenue last quarter, the company is unlikely to miss the pennies I've denied it. Still, I feel I owe an explanation: I'm "adnorant," which is to say I ignore online ads.

I've been using a Firefox plugin called CustomizeGoogle to block Google ads and generally improve the search experience.
